We have an opportunity for a Prevention Officer (Road Safety) to join our team based at Service Headquarters.

As a Prevention Officer (Road Safety), you will play an integral role working with the Road Safety Lead and Road Safety team to reduce preventable incidents of those killed and seriously injured on the roads within our Service area. You will be responsible for planning, designing, delivering and evaluating prevention interventions that are data led and target the most at-risk groups on our roads – including younger drivers and motorcyclists.
In this role you will supervise and oversee a team of Road Safety Advocates in the delivery of risk reduction interventions across Devon and Somerset. You will develop, nurture, promote and maintain effective, relevant, and synergistic working relationships with key partners and stakeholders to ensure positive risk reduction outcomes are achieved through targeted prevention activity.
This role involves large amounts of lone working and will be managed by the Community Safety Team.
The successful applicant must undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced check and hold a valid car or motorbike driving licence as this is an essential requirement for this role.

Key Responsibilities as our Prevention Officer (Road Safety):
Knowledge:
1. To assist the Road Safety Lead and Road Safety Team with cohesive partnership working in line with DSFRS Road Safety Strategy and Delivery Plan.
2. To maintain comprehensive understanding of existing and emerging road related risks within our communities, to include up to date research around the ‘Safe Systems Approach’ and High-risk road users.
3. Ensure subject matter expertise for a minimum of one key at risk road user younger drivers, motorcyclists) group in line with our road strategy Road Safety Plan.
4. To acquire, maintain and enhance professional knowledge by networking, attending training courses, benchmarking performance against other Fire Services ad reviewing professional publications, maintaining a high level of subject matter understanding.
5. To act as a point of contact for colleagues, partners, safety professionals, and those in contact with high risk groups.
6. Under the instruction of the Road Safety Lead ensure the effective development and delivery of, evidence-based prevention interventions using the latest industry and empirical evidence to ensure that we are reaching our target audience and creating positive outcomes in line with the Community Risk Management Plan (CRMP) and our road safety strategy. This will include knowledge and understanding of the latest behaviour change techniques, and education theories.
Supervision of Advocates:
7. Oversee and actively engage in the day to day running of advocate staff, including supporting advocates through induction and training required.
8. Monitor the performance of Advocates whilst delivering risk reduction activities through quality assurance, using set quality standards, and showcasing best practice.
9. Oversee and monitor the day to day tasks and schedules of advocates. Ensuring pre and post activity checks including resource replenishment and administration are completed.
Evaluation:
10. To report back to the Road Safety Lead and assist in the effective delivery, evaluation and feedback processes for all interventions within the team as part of the role.
11. To provide relevant evaluation data and reports to the Road Safety Lead where required.
12. To provide staff and advocates with event specific data and requirements to allow for adequate event feedback in the format of QR Codes, Microsoft Forms, Teams and Mentimeter.
Collaboration and Event Organisation:
13. To co-ordinate partnership and multiagency risk reduction interventions, including active collaboration with the police, ambulance, air ambulance, operational fire crews, neighbouring FRS, highways authorities, and MOD. All findings and evaluations to be overseen and shared with the Road Safety Lead.
Delivery and Partnership Working:
14. To assist with partnership working, including Vision Zero South West and West of England Road Safety Partnership.
15. To work closely with the Road Safety Lead assisting with the road safety partners, stakeholders and third-party organisations to assist in coordinating, delivering, and supporting effective road safety activity that target audiences in the Service area who are identified as most at risk on the roads.
16. To assist the Road Safety Lead in working collaboratively with partners to ensure that we are using the best available intelligence and data around risk reduction to inform and promote our priorities.
17. To ensure that advocates and immediate staff adhere to retrospective risk assessment and policies such as:- Safeguarding.
Wider Community Safety Activity:
18. To assist the Road Safety Lead and Community Safety team in promoting, delivering, and supporting community safety activities to support service objectives:
19. Generation of Home Safety Visit (HSV) referrals.
20. Identify potential new partnerships.
21. Deliver other key safety messages and campaigns
22. To maintain a person-centred resolution / outcome for local and national campaigns.
23. To understand and complete associated administration duties.

24. Proven ability to create reports / written work using data, evidence and analysis from a variety of sources.
25. Excellent written and oral communication / interpersonal skills including the ability to present information clearly, concisely, and accurately – for example, in the design of intervention packages that will be used at national level.
26. Proven ability to plan, present, host and deliver, and evaluate multi-agency, community, and risk reduction events at a local, regional, and national level – including proven experience of delivering to expert audiences industry conferences.
27. Excellent ICT skills, for example; effective use of social media platforms, working knowledge of MS Office software packages (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS365, MS Teams, SharePoint).
28. Proven ability to resolve problems using structured approach.
29. Proven experience of planning and co-ordinating teams.
