Tameside General Hospitalis situated eight miles to the east of Manchester and serves a population of approximately 250,000. The hospital is situated for both easy access to both central Manchester and the Peak District.
We are looking for a keen, enthusiastic and suitably qualified individual to join our small but friendly team. We are a fully computerised laboratory with electronic links to the wards and local GPs. The Blood Sciences Department is well equipped with 2 x Beckman DxH 800 (Haematology), 2 x Werfen ACL TOP 350, 2 x Ortho Vision (Transfusion), 1 x Beckman Automate (pre-analytics), 2 x Beckman AU5800 (Biochemistry), 2 x Beckman DxI 800 (Immunoassay), Tosoh G11 (HbA1c/ HbV) and Sebia Hydrasys (Electrophoresis).
We are UKAS accredited and a HCPC accredited training laboratory.
Main duties of the job
1. To receive, sort and book in samples for laboratory investigations, to perform any required pre-analytical procedures and then direct the samples to the appropriate section for analysis.
2. To prepare samples which are not processed in-house for referral off-site.
3. To perform some standard diagnostic biochemical tests after appropriate training.
4. To ensure results received from referral laboratories are entered into the LIMS.
5. To deal with queries regarding results, tests, samples, sample handling, issues & complaints.
6. To ensure deliveries are passed to the correct department or section.
7. To assist in the supervision, training, development and competence assessment of, and act as mentor to, Medical Laboratory Assistants.
8. To supervise the day to day running of the department, allocating and prioritising workload and resources, to ensure sample reception runs as efficiently as possible.
9. To manage rotas and day-to-day staffing in the department.
10. To help formulate, document and review departmental policies and procedures.
11. To carry out audits.
12. To undertake staff Personal Development Reviewss.
13. To carry out staff Return to Work interviews and sickness monitoring.
14. To monitor stock levels.
15. To assist the Management team with administrative duties and data input.
