Duties and Responsibilities Key Duties Raise significant funds for the University – particularly for priority projects in support of University strategy - through legacy gifts, In Memoriam Giving and other forms of planned giving from individuals including alumni, staff and former staff, and other friends of the University. Fundraising activities will include wide-ranging marketing, highly personalised communications, face-to-face meetings, events, etc. Stewardship will be both standardised across the programme, and highly personalised where appropriate. Manage and develop relationships with the portfolio of University legacy pledgers, and ensure that legacy pledgers agreed levels of stewardship and support. Where appropriate, to work closely with academic and other staff members to develop relationships and secure and steward pledges. Undertake all aspects of legacy administration, liaising with solicitors and executors to receive gifts due to the University in a timely fashion, and liaising with internal colleagues to ensure that donations received are allocated in a timely fashion to the right internal recipient(s). Seek legal advice in the event of complex estate administration or other relevant legal issues. Devise and implement legacy marketing and stewardship programmes (both as groups and individually, as appropriate), with the support of the Supporter Relations team, other administrators and academic colleagues. Ensure that accurate records and up-to-date information on all aspects of legacies and legacy pledgers are maintained. Devise and implement an in memoriam fundraising programme in collaboration with the Leadership Giving and Supporter Relations Teams. Ensure that all stakeholders including academic members of staff, prospective and existing legacy pledgers, as well as next of kin of legacy pledgers (where appropriate) receive timely information about the progress and outcome of projects supported or potentially funded through legacy gifts. Establish excellent working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates, including academic staff, the fundraising team and the supporter engagement team; and outside bodies including solicitors and lay executors. Advise and guide other staff across the University on legacy fundraising, policies and practice as required, and ensure that all legacy activity is co-ordinated. Devise and implement marketing and stewardship programmes to promote and support legacy and In Memoriam giving to the University, in support of the University’s fundraising strategy. Provide advice and guidance to other members of staff on legacy and In Memoriam fundraising as appropriate. Undertake all main aspects of legacy administration, including liaison with external legal advisors in complex cases. The Development and Alumni Relations Team has a blended approach to working. We currently work on campus on Wednesdays and remotely (from home) for the rest of the week, unless there is a business need to be on campus. The option to work on campus full time is available if staff members choose to do this. Essential Criteria Qualifications and Education Degree/NVQ 6 or equivalent Professional membership/experience Knowledge, Skills and Experience Substantial experience of stewarding and cultivating relationships with high-level donors / clients; and the ability to represent the University to a wide range of individuals including at a senior level. A good knowledge and understanding of the processes and best practice involved in raising and managing legacy pledges and gifts, including awareness of estate administration and other relevant legislation in the UK and abroad. Demonstrable ability to make successful telephone and face-to-face asks for legacy support, as well as the ability and knowledge to advise on appropriate handling of high-level legacy pledgers and prospects. Ability to develop and continuously improve standard systems for legacy management, utilising knowledge of databases and the internet, and MS Office. Customer Service, Communication and Team Working Strong communication and negotiating skills, demonstrating honesty and integrity in all interactions, coupled with an articulate and confident manner, demonstrating sensitivity and diplomacy in order to develop good relationships and solicit both legacy and lifetime gifts. Excellent written communication skills to produce fundraising proposals and accurate reports to a high standard of presentation; including the ability to understand and convey technical or scientific information, sometimes communicating complex academic visions to non-academic supporters. Planning, Analysis and Problem solving Evidence of ability to solve unusual problems using initiative and creativity, identifying and proposing practical solutions and resolving problems; Evidence of ability to work unsupervised to deadlines, planning and setting priorities for own work and that of others and monitoring progress. Personal qualities: Ability and willingness to travel and occasionally to work at evenings or weekends. Desirable Criteria Good working knowledge of the Raiser’s Edge fundraising software or other CRM databases.
