The UK Government has established UK Industrial Fusion Solutions (UKIFS) Ltd., a subsidiary of UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), to lead the charge in delivering fusion energy through design and delivery of the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) protype fusion plant. UKIFS is establishing itself, setting up the company, attracting talent, engaging with industry, developing a supply chain, and planning and constructing of the STEP prototype.
Fusion energy, crucial for combating climate change and ensuring energy independence, is expected to be commercially viable by mid-century. The salary for this role is £54,376 (inclusive of a Market Premium Payment (MPP)), and onsite working is expected for 60% each week.

The Role
UKIFS is leading the STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) programme to deliver the world’s first prototype fusion energy plant by 2040, driving a path to the commercial viability of fusion. As part of this bold and ambitious mission, we are seeking a STEP Head of Establishment, West Burton, to lead our teams in West Burton in establishing the future home of STEP.
The key responsibilities of the Senior Cost Engineer are:
* Lead the development of cost models relevant to the assigned product areas. Work closely with the respective technical teams to assure consistency with the product design as well as create awareness of the cost models relevant to their product area
* Influence the design of the individual product areas to lead to an integrated cost optimised plant design and instil a cost conscience in the wider programme
* Form an integrated understanding on how the cost of an individual system affects the overarching cost of the prototype and potential commercial successors
* Launch and manage external procurement for cost estimation activities
* Assure timeliness of the creation of the model in relation to the required decision timescales
* To act as main point of contact for cost assessment in the relevant product area and participate in relevant design review meetings
* To quickly gain a top-level understanding of the relevant subject matter of the partnered product areas
* Identify and protect intellectual property across all costing activities
* Ensure robust and rigorous documentation of cost modelling and optimisation efforts using succinct, programme relevant and highly credible costing reports, ensuring all cost reports are passed through the costing due diligence process soliciting the review and approval of Subject Matter Experts
* Coach graduate cost engineers in both cost engineering and fusion power plant integration
Qualifications
Essential Requirements:
* Degree engineering/scientific discipline or significant experience of working in an engineering field
* Either strong cost engineering background in infrastructure / engineering environments with good technical understanding and interest in integrated fusion power plant design, or strong knowledge of fusion power plant integration and interest in costs
* Strong verbal and written communication skills
* Demonstrated ability to quickly build a working knowledge of a new, complex subject matter
* Self-motivated and capable of working independently within a multi-disciplinary team
* Ability to influence product design leads, senior management, and other stakeholders
* Ability to plan and manage costing modelling and optimisation activities to support commercially viable product options
* Ability to collaborate with wide range of stakeholders (R&D product development teams, UK universities, SMEs and suppliers to address gaps and inform critical costing activities)
* Resilience in a high paced working environment
