This rarely advertised role involves working with patients on the specialist wards at QVH, where you will be alongside a range of other healthcare professionals providing rehabilitation. You will carry out care plans in order to help patients adapt to changes as a result of their illness or injury and be part of them achieving their maximum physical, emotional and social capabilities.
You will also develop skills in the measuring, pattern making and fabrication of pressure garments alongside an experienced team of technicians. (Pressure garments are a supportive, form fitting piece of clothing which applies constant pressure to assist with scarring or swelling)
Main duties of the job
To provide a pressure garment service to the therapy department at QVH for both inpatients and outpatients as well as to private service providers who purchase the service. This involves the construction of individually designed and fabricated compression garments, soft splints and adaptive devices. Therefore, previous experience and skills on a sewing machine are required.
To support the occupational therapists and physiotherapists in their specific treatment programmes for patients to achieve rehabilitation goals. As a rehabilitation assistant, you will deliver treatment sessions for patients who have undergone burns, plastics or head and neck surgery.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Key result areas:
* To fabricate individually measured compression garments, soft splints and adaptive devices as required by occupational and physiotherapists.
* To provide assistance in pressure garment fabrication to occupational therapists/physiotherapists.
* To be responsible for the safe and competent use of all sewing room equipment and appliances.
* To take on delegated responsibility from therapists for tasks within the therapy department.
* To assist in measuring for garments.
* To provide assistance in rehabilitation to occupational therapists/physiotherapists working within the burns, plastics and head and neck team.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Secondary education to GCSE level including English and Maths.
* NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent relevant experience.
* Further studies in contour design and pattern grading courses.
Experience
* Base level knowledge of sewing skills and some experience in fabrication, especially tailoring techniques.
Skills
* Ability to prioritise own workload.
* Mathematical and geometry skills for accurate interpretation of 2D information into 3D design.
