Advanced Training Fellow - RENAL MEDICINE
Applications are invited for an Advanced Training Fellow in the Renal Medicine Department. This post originally replaced a fully recognised training post and the post holder will be given similar training and educational opportunities as those in a training post position. The post holder will be allocated an educational supervisor and will be given the opportunity to perform audits to enhance their CV. The post may also be useful for people working towards article 14 or for people uncertain as to whether they wish to apply for a nephrology post in the longer term. The post and experience has in general received very good feedback from previous post holders.
The post holder will participate on a 1:6 weekday overnight on-call rota and weekend on-call rota with a frequency of 1:3.
Main duties of the job
UHNM renal unit undertakes all aspects of renal care with the exception of transplant surgery. We pride ourselves in excellent care. We consistently perform well in national benchmarking. We have particular expertise in PD (led by Professor Davies international expert). We have one of the highest rates of patients on home therapies in the UK and have been a national leader in developing assisted APD. We are considered a regional model of excellence for providing pre and post-operative transplant care, in a non-transplanting unit. A wide range of sub-specialty clinics are provided.
Job responsibilities
The post holder will be working with a team of Consultants, Specialty Doctors, Trust Doctors, Specialty Trainees, Core Trainees and Foundation Trainees. The responsibility of the Fellow is to provide good clinical care in nephrology, dialysis and transplantation as directed by senior colleagues and clinical circumstances in line with the GMCs Good Medical Practice.
Clinical Duties:
The fellow will join a team of middle grade doctors including 3 specialty trainees and specialty doctors. The fellow's main duties will include providing inpatient cover on the renal ward, providing an outpatient service alongside consultants, providing a referral service to other specialties carrying out specific treatments and procedures (once adequately trained) following prevalent unit guidelines. The fellow will be part of a rota to provide inpatient cover on the renal ward when she/he will be posted on the ward for a month at a time. The nephrology and transplant clinics will be allocated on a monthly basis although the fellow will have fixed clinic commitments in dialysis medicine. The middle grade doctors will take turns to provide the referral service. The fellow will also be part of a renal middle grade on-call rota.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* MBBS or equivalent
* Eligible for full GMC registration via PLAB test or MTI route or completed all parts of the Federation of Royal College of Physicians MRCP
* Awards/distinctions whilst studying for 1st degree
* Academic and extra curricular achievements
* ALS certification
Clinical Experience
* 3 years continuous post qualification experience in relevant specialty
* Appropriate skills & experience to demonstrate in the chosen specialty minimum equivalent to ST3.
* Presented evidence of experience to date supported by references
Skills
* Proven ability to work as a member of a team is prudent and the ability to organise and prioritise busy workloads effectively and cope under pressure is crucial
* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, senior medical staff and other health professionals is vital
* Proficient and efficient handling of medical problems with evidence of safe sound practical procedures
