About the role
Dorset Council Fleet Services have a vacancy for a full-time Commercial Vehicle Technician. Dorset Council has five vehicle workshops in the county, and this vacancy is based at the Crookhill Depot, Weymouth workshop where the successful candidate will join four other Technicians.
What you will be doing:
Your role will be to service and maintain Dorset Council's diverse range of vehicles and plant, which include light and heavy commercial vehicles, buses, and specialist equipment such as gritters and refuse collection vehicles. The majority of vehicles maintained at Crookhill workshop are refuse collection vehicles.
Your work will include completing safety inspections on vehicles, servicing, and preparing vehicles for annual tests, including steam cleaning. This scheduled work will be interrupted by unscheduled breakdowns and running defect repairs, so you will need to be flexible in how you approach your work. While most rectification work is performed in the workshop, you may on occasion be asked to attend a roadside breakdown. Similarly, there may be occasions when you will need to work beyond your normal hours to get a frontline vehicle back on the road. You can be asked to work from one of the other four vehicle workshops if the service requires.
Other duties will include good housekeeping in the workshops and attending any training that the Council arranges for you.
A positive attitude, adaptability, a willingness to learn, and an understanding that our customers (other Council departments) come first are behaviours that the successful candidate will need to demonstrate.
In return, we can offer you the opportunity of improving your existing knowledge and skills, with a view of developing your career within what is currently one of the most job-secure sectors at this time.
About you:
As a minimum, you will have prior experience of working on commercial vehicles and hold an NVQ Level 3 or City and Guilds qualification in vehicle maintenance/engineering or equivalent.
