Senior SQL & Oracle DBA The Senior SQL & Oracle DBA is a knowledgeable technical person within Redcentric, who can deliver the business as usual activity of managed service customers whilst working alongside other senior engineers and technical leads on project / service improvement activity. The role is part of a small team with a strong work ethic that operates an on-call rota system. The Role To work within a team of SQL & Oracle DBAs and Windows engineers to deliver and support the Company's client base and ensure the underlying service in line with our stated SLAs and OLAs. The ideal candidate must demonstrate: Senior-level SQL Server DBA expertise : Extensive experience in SQL Server administration across multiple versions (2012-2019 and later), including installation, configuration, performance tuning, and high availability (HA) solutions such as AlwaysOn Availability Groups, replication, and clustering. Mid-level Oracle DBA skills : Solid experience in Oracle Database administration (versions 11g, 12c, and later), including basic configuration, backup and recovery using RMAN, performance tuning, and general database maintenance. SQL Server performance tuning : Expertise in identifying and resolving SQL Server performance bottlenecks through query optimization, indexing strategies, and the use of tools like SQL Profiler, Extended Events, and DMVs. Backup and recovery : Strong experience in designing and implementing backup and recovery strategies for SQL Server and competent in Oracle RMAN-based backup and recovery procedures. Automation and scripting : Advanced skills in automating SQL Server administration tasks. Familiarity with Oracle PL/SQL and UNIX scripting for automating routine Oracle tasks. Security and compliance : Expertise in implementing SQL Server security best practices, such as encryption, auditing, and user role management, with working knowledge of Oracle security features. Key Responsibilities SQL Server Administration : Administration of SQL Server databases, including patching, upgrades, index maintenance, and query optimization to ensure database performance and stability. Oracle Database Support : Provide mid-level support for Oracle environments, handling routine database tasks such as backups, monitoring, and performance tuning under the guidance of senior Oracle DBAs when needed. Database Security : Implement and maintain security protocols in both SQL Server and Oracle environments, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices. Monitoring and Troubleshooting : Proactively monitor SQL Server using tools like SSMS, Extended Events, and Performance Monitor. Apply similar monitoring practices for Oracle using Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) or other relevant tools. Disaster Recovery and High Availability : Lead the design and implementation of SQL Server high-availability and disaster recovery strategies. Assist in maintaining Oracle Data Guard and similar technologies at a mid-level. Collaboration : Work closely with Windows and Unix engineers and other teams to deliver database services and support customer projects, ensuring all services are documented and transitioned into managed services effectively. Person Specification Skills Senior-level SQL Server DBA experience : Proven expertise in managing large and complex SQL Server environments, including advanced knowledge of SQL internals, high availability, and disaster recovery strategies. Mid-level Oracle DBA experience : Competence in managing Oracle databases at an intermediate level, with a solid understanding of core Oracle concepts such as RMAN, basic performance tuning, and database monitoring. Problem-solving skills : Strong analytical abilities to diagnose and resolve complex SQL Server issues, with sufficient skills to handle intermediate Oracle database challenges. People and communication skills : Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with stakeholders at all levels, and the ability to mentor junior team members. Work independently and proactively : Ability to manage multiple tasks independently, prioritise workload, and respond effectively to business-critical situations. Experience with cloud platforms : Familiarity with cloud-based database services (e.g., Azure SQL)
