Job Summary

Main duties of the job
* Provide a high standard of orthoptics to patients of all ages and with a wide variety of orthoptic conditions.
* Be responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring individual Orthoptic treatment plans / care pathways for patients of all ages using advanced clinical reasoning and evidence based practice.
* Make decisions and offer advice about the orthoptic care of a child as part of a multi-disciplinary team of ophthalmologists, orthoptists, optometrists, medical photographers, ophthalmic technicians, nurses, clerical staff and secretarial staff.
* Undertake an orthoptic extended role in line with departmental requirements.
Minimum Requirements
* Diploma or Degree (BSc Hons or BMedSci in Orthoptics) & registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
* Previous orthoptic experience (applications welcome from newly qualified graduates and appointment will be to band 5 if no previous experience)
* Sound clinical experience and judgement underpinned by specialist theoretical knowledge base

* To provide Orthoptic services as an autonomous practitioner.
* Expected to work clinically to deliver a range of core Orthoptic services
* To provide Orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and management of patients of all ages and abilities, planning, implementing, and monitoring individual Orthoptic treatment plans / care pathways using clinical reasoning and evidence based practice.
* To support Ophthalmology as required.
Person Specification
Education, Qualification & Training
Essential
* Degree in Orthoptics or Diploma if trained before existence of degree qualification
* To be registered with the HCPC
Desirable
* Member of the British and Irish Orthoptic society
Experience
Essential
* Ability to assess, diagnose and treat a full range of Orthoptic cases
* Ability to manage and take responsibility for own workload without direct clinical supervision.
* To be able to work under pressure in a busy environment with time constraints
* To be able to adapt and work flexible to meet the needs of the service
Skills, Abilities & Knowledge
Essential
* Demonstrate an awareness and motivation towards continued professional development (CPD)
* Computer literacy with knowledge and experience using Microsoft word
Desirable
* To show interest in undertaking an extended role in the department
* Knowledge of the patient administration system
* Good time keeping & Organisational skills
