Job Overview
Through the collection of blood samples from Patients, you will assist the workforce of Pathology in providing a specialised, diagnostic service contributing to the clinical care of the patient, enabling diagnosis and subsequent monitoring of the effectiveness of treatment given.
Using skills gained through the Phlebotomy training scheme, you will be expected to develop judgement and utilise learnt specialist skills and scientific knowledge to assist in the provision of a high-quality and timely Phlebotomy service.
Main Duties of the Job
1. To perform Phlebotomy ensuring minimal distress and discomfort to patients at all times.
2. To take blood samples from patients, assisting in the provision of routine analysis of specimens within Pathology in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Phlebotomy training manual.
3. The post holder will not be expected to possess any formal qualifications, though some academic interest in biological sciences would be advantageous.
4. The post holder will be expected to have received training in phlebotomy techniques and demonstrate a satisfactory level of competence.
5. Full training appropriate for the use of the laboratory computer system will be given.
Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
1. Phlebotomists will have reached an appropriate level of competence to take blood samples from patients independently in wards and clinics.
2. Maintain high standards of safety ensuring the Health & Safety of self, other staff, patients, and visitors.
3. Ensure that arrangements for the security of buildings, equipment, and chemicals are carried out in accordance with laboratory policy.
4. Ensure high standards of accuracy when recording, transcribing, and checking patient demographics.
5. Communicate any relevant information within the team to ensure the continual and efficient running of the service.
Person Specification
Education/Qualifications
* GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics at grade C / level 5 or above.
Knowledge
* Extensive knowledge of working within an NHS environment.
* Minimum of 1 year Phlebotomy experience in an inpatient/outpatient environment.
* Anatomy and Physiology relevant to phlebotomy.
