Requirements:
* Must hold a valid certification as a Sign Language Interpreter in Washington State.
* Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification or equivalent preferred.
* Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certification with a score of 3.5 or higher is preferred.
* Completion of a degree or certification program in American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting or a related field.
* Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and familiarity with deaf culture.
* Experience working as an interpreter, preferably in a school or educational setting.
* Strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with school teams and families.
Responsibilities:
* Provide real-time ASL interpretation for students in academic, social, and extracurricular settings.
* Adapt interpreting methods based on students’ age, language level, and individual needs.
* Ensure effective communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their peers, teachers, and staff.
* Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, and families to support students’ academic and social success.
* Provide interpretation during school events, such as assemblies, field trips, and parent-teacher conferences.
* Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional ethical standards for interpreters.
* Clarify and rephrase information as needed to ensure student understanding without altering content.
* Act as a cultural mediator when appropriate to support understanding between deaf students and hearing staff or peers.
* Document and report any issues related to student progress or interpreting needs to school personnel.
