Energy Security and Net Zero Lawyers and Legal Officers

The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments. Our work touches on most aspects of public life, from developing and drafting legislation to providing legal advice on policies and ensuring value from contracts.
Energy Security and Net Zero Legal is a GLD Advisory Directorate focusing on providing legal advice relating to the UK’s ambitious energy portfolio. Its work spans policies on decarbonisation technologies, nuclear power, clean energy, energy efficiency, energy security, and climate change.
Your role
In this role, you’ll provide specialist legal and public law advice to ministers and officials, ensuring the legal implications of policies are thoroughly considered. You will draft secondary legislation, advise on planning decisions, and respond to legal challenges. Additionally, you will support the Government in being accountable for its role.
Minimum Requirements:
1. Security clearance to BPSS level.
2. Public law experience from private practice, academic study, or a public body.
3. Desirable: Experience in energy law.

To succeed in this role, you should demonstrate reliable judgement, strategic thinking, and excellent communication skills, with a good understanding of the role of lawyers in government.
