About this client/child: Benny is a happy, engaging, and determined 11-year-old boy, who is much loved by his teachers, therapists, and carers. He is physically limited because of cerebral palsy but inspires others with his hard work and happy attitude. He loves staying busy with family and friends, reading, working on math problems, doing his therapies, and going on walks in his adapted pushchair. Benny is at the heart of a loving and supportive family that provides every opportunity for him to reach his full potential. In addition to cerebral palsy, he has epilepsy (well controlled via daily medication) and a VP shunt (which has never had an issue). He doesn’t speak normally, but uses facial expressions, YES/NO hand signals, and pointing to communicate, and he does some vocalisations. Benny does not (yet) walk, so uses a wheelchair at home and an adapted pushchair outside. He weighs about 20 kgs, so his parents and carers lift and carry him when necessary (including up one flight of stairs to his bedroom). Benny attends a specialist school, participates in ongoing intensive therapy (MAES and Conductive Education), and academic tutoring each week (reading and maths). He lives at home with Mum, Dad, his 17-year-old brother, his twin sister, a new puppy, and (on the weekends) his 17-year-old cousin who is at boarding school during the week. This makes for a busy and happy family home.
Overview of role: Since he was a baby, Benny has had ongoing therapy support, and his progress is remarkable and better than the original prognosis. Despite his physical disability, he can move his body, roll on the floor, hold a fork to feed himself (depending on the food), and hold a pencil. The Weekend SEN Nanny/Manny will support Benny with all practical tasks such as personal care, manual handling etc. and arrange fun and educational activities to ensure he is occupied and stimulated, plans trips out and about, such as a walk through nearby Hampstead Heath or attending different events; Benny wants to enjoy his weekends and his Weekend SEN Nanny/Manny needs to bring ideas and use their initiative. Most Saturdays, he attends therapy or the local Synagogue with his family and enjoys family lunch. It is important for Benny to have consistency; therefore, we do require commitment to working every weekend.
Who this job would suit: A creative, proactive, and enthusiastic SEN professional with a passion for supporting others to reach their full potential, and keen to learn new skills. You will have a calm and confident approach to supporting young people with additional needs; and continually strive to promote independence and advocate.
What’s great about this job: This role comes highly recommended by previous Snap care staff who were lucky enough to have worked with Benny; they are still in touch with Benny and his family. This indeed speaks volumes regarding the working environment. You will be welcomed and supported. This is an opportunity not to be missed. Benny is quite incredible, with such potential, and just a wonderful young person to champion.
