THE ROLE
Nations and Local are leading on the production of the Overnight radio programme broadcast across our domestic services including BBC Radio 5Live, along with the Local and Nations radio networks. We are recruiting 1 SJ producer based in Glasgow.
As a senior journalist you will output edit the show which will become the place to come for companionship and interactivity. It will also seek to reflect major global news events as well as big international sporting moments where the BBC has the rights.
We want to tell the high-quality stories that really matter to people across the country. We want to combine breaking and developing news with accessible explanation of events. As well as outputting you will work on a rota which includes planning – by its very nature there will be a substantial number of overnight shifts.
Main Responsibilities
As a Senior Journalist on the Overnight team your focus will be on producing and outputting the show. You will set the agenda for the show and work with the presenter to develop talking points, interactivity and ensure the programme reflects a breadth of editorial story-telling.
In this senior role you will need to understand the importance of impartiality; have extensive editorial experience; sound judgement and be assertive in decision making.
You’ll be responsible for researching, scripting and producing audio content under tight deadlines. You should have first-class news judgement and audio production skills and have an understanding of how to build a radio show that truly connects.
You will ensure that the output meets BBC editorial policy standards.
Are you the right candidate?
* A proven track record of delivering on-the-day radio programmes which includes co-ordinating the delivery of content by managing practical, editorial and technical demands.
* Experience of working closely with a variety of presenters.
* Demonstrable knowledge of the BBC’s tools and techniques to produce radio.
* An awareness of UK and international news.
* An ability to work under pressure and operate under tight timescales, along with the ability to deal with daily and long-term editorial demands.
* Prioritises and plans activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources.
* Ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, adapt, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media suitable for multimedia output.
* Ability to manage resources, staff, technical facilities and budgets, in order to make challenging broadcasting in the most cost effective manner.
