About The Role
Contract Type: Volunteer
School Governors are volunteers who are committed to making sure that a school provides the best possible education for its pupils. Governors come from a range of different backgrounds and bring different skills and expertise to the role. Governors act as a team to:
* Set the strategic vision of the school
* Hold the Head Teacher to account for the performance of the school
* Monitor progress towards the school’s priorities and targets
* Agree and monitor the school budget to ensure money is well-spent
A Governor takes on a strategic role and does not get involved in the day-to-day running of the school. Governors should expect to spend approximately 10-20 days a year on their role. This would include:
* Attending all governing body meetings, usually 3 to 6 per year
* Attending any subcommittee meetings they are involved in, approximately 3 a year
* Reading any papers circulated before meetings
* Undertaking any training or relevant research required
* Visiting the school as part of a programme of governor visits with a specific focus

This role is subject to:
* DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) clearance - this post is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (amended in 2013). Appointable candidates will be required to apply for an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. * An interest in becoming a governor and offering time as a volunteer to the role
* Skills, knowledge and experience to strengthen a governing body (see full job description)
* Not be disqualified from becoming a governor (see details in the Governor Job Description)
About Us
* The School Governance Unit at Manchester City Council supports schools and academies in Manchester to recruit governors.
* We undertake virtual interviews on a regular basis to source people with the skills and experience our schools and academies are looking for to fill their governor vacancies.
* After a successful interview, applicants are provided with the details of a suitable governor placement to consider. Candidates' details are then forwarded to the school for consideration. The final decision about the governor appointment is made by the school.
