We would like to highlight an exciting, fully-funded PhD opportunity on tracking critical minerals using ice sheet dynamics, which brings together a supervisory team spanning all necessary expertise, in four institutions across two countries. It is generously sponsored by the Ontario Geological Survey, Canada. This is a great opportunity for a prospective student with an interest in critical minerals, glacial processes, GIS and quaternary geology. The PhD will be based in the UK at the University of Aberdeen, though it is required that the student will conduct extensive fieldwork in Ontario, Canada, supported by the Ontario Geological Survey.
The studentship is open to non-UK citizens. The project is fully funded, with tuition fees (national or international), a budget for training and research, and stipend at the UKRI 2025 rate all provided, plus additional financial support by our CASE partner, the Ontario Geological Survey, while in the field. A valid driving license is required for fieldwork.
This studentship is part of TARGET, the Training and Research Group for Energy Transition Mineral Resources, a UK Natural Environment Research Council sponsored Centre for Doctoral Training, which has just announced this and other PhD projects for the October 2025 start. The studentships will be awarded on applicant quality ranking only.
Application deadline is 22nd January 2025. For specific information about this project please contact the lead co-supervisors: UK: Prof. Matteo Spagnolo (m.spagnolo@abdn.ac.uk) and Canada: Prof. Martin Ross (maross@uwaterloo.ca).
