We have a new opportunity to join the Suffolk County Council (SCC) Growth, Highways, and Infrastructure Directorate as a Principal Engineer, based in Endeavour House, Ipswich.

Your role and responsibilities
As a Principal Engineer, you will head a small team delivering key infrastructure projects across Suffolk. With your specialist knowledge, you'll make pivotal decisions and represent our highways interests in NSIP planning consultations, examinations, discharging requirements and reviewing management or travel plans. Your technical expertise will be vital in negotiating solutions for mitigation of environmental and transport impacts associated with development promoting sustainable travel modes, legacy projects and maximising environmental benefits with developers and securing these through planning requirements or management plans. You will be responsible for managing a small team of planners or engineers, commissioning external consultants and liaising with internal and external organisations. This exciting role offers an opportunity to positively influence major energy schemes from start to finish in co-operation assisting a wide range of stakeholders.
You will need
* Ideally to be a chartered or incorporated engineer or have significant practical experience in a relevant field.
* Experience in civil engineering or highway development management or planning, preferably with experience in using highway design (Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) / Manual for Streets), Planning Legislation (Town and Country Planning Act / National Planning Performance Framework, Planning Act 2008) and local authority development management and planning processes.
* Experience of working with multi-agency teams to deliver written responses to complex projects within demanding schedules.
* Detailed technical ability and an understanding of the use of environmental and transport assessments, reports, plans, traffic modelling and drawings.
* An understanding of Highway Planning, Construction Design Management (CDM) and Health and Safety Legislation.

* The Transport Strategy Team is responsible for delivering inclusive growth as it applies to transport in Suffolk.
* You will work closely with colleagues in the wider project management, planning, and highways teams who also support the delivery of NSIPs.
