York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is looking to welcome applicants to join our friendly, dynamic and enthusiastic team of Stroke Consultants based at York Hospital. We have an ambitious programme of service modernisation and a reputation for providing high quality services. The Trust is advancing its ambitious and exciting developments across York and Scarborough and in line with this an opportunity now exists to appoint a Consultant in Stroke Medicine.
The Acute Stroke Unit at York Hospital is a 25 bedded mixed hyper-acute (10 beds) and acute unit. Our 17 bedded Stroke Rehabilitation Ward at York provides intensive stroke specific therapy- this is based at Whitecross Court, a short walk from the main hospital. There is a 15 bedded rehabilitation ward at Bridlington hospital which provides specialist stroke care to patients from the East Coast. The stroke service actively participates in the Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme (SSNAP).
Main duties of the job
Sessional commitments will include work on the Acute Stroke Unit, the Stroke Rehabilitation Unit, rapid-access TIA clinics and a stroke follow-up clinic. The on-call commitment is 1 in 7.

The Trust's location allows easy access to the outstanding countryside of the Yorkshire Dales, Moors and coast. It has excellent schools, many rated as "outstanding" by OFSTED, as well as excellent transport links, being 2 hours from London and 30 minutes from Leeds by train. We are looking for friendly, enthusiastic and dynamic individuals who will work well within the team to develop inpatient and outpatient services.
York Hospital provides hyper-acute stroke care, Stroke thrombolysis 24/7, a 7 day TIA service based on the stroke unit with a same day TIA clinic, stroke rehabilitation, stroke early supported discharge, stroke outpatient/follow-up clinics and stroke research. We provide stroke services to patients in the Scarborough and Harrogate catchment area through an agreed pathway using a direct transfer model. We assess patients for thrombectomy and send patients to Hull for this procedure.
