An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Teacher of Chemistry and Biology to join our flourishing, dynamic Science department, on a permanent basis. The position may suit a trainee teacher, a newly qualified member of the profession, or someone with more experience; in each case, the successful applicant will be a strong classroom practitioner, able to meet the rewarding challenge of teaching our able and inquisitive boys from year 7 to Sixth Form. A strong commitment to taking part in extra-curricular activities within school is of particular importance.
All boys take chemistry up to Year 11, taking three science GCSEs and a small number taking the Double Award science route (AQA Trilogy 8464). Usually, around 50 boys continue the subject to ‘A’ level. Oxbridge candidates are identified during Year 12 and tutored by members of the Department during Year 13.
Biology is taught in purpose-built laboratories by subject specialists as separate science lessons to Chemistry and Physics. Currently, the vast majority of boys study Biology as a separate GCSE (AQA 8461) with two 90-minute exams to assess the course. Some students may follow the Science (Trilogy) route with two 60-minute exams providing the assessment at the end of Year 11.
Biology is a popular subject with a large number of Sixth Form boys regularly opting to study Biology (AQA) at A level, no doubt reflecting the achievement of boys at A-level, which is extremely high (74% A*- B on average over the last five years).
In Autumn 2021, significant changes were made to the leadership structure of the School Foundation, investing the newly created position of Head of Foundation with overall responsibility. Within the new structure, there are three sections: Girls’ Division, Boys’ Division, and Primary Division. A Head of each Division and the Head of Foundation, together with the Clerk and Treasurer, are the Foundation’s Senior Officers; they are directly accountable to the Governors.
The vast majority of students progress to their first choice university and the School provides a regular supply of Sixth Formers to highly competitive courses and universities. Whilst the academic work of the two senior schools is largely separate, there are occasionally joint Sixth Form classes and there is considerable collaboration in extra-curricular activities.
