Overview of role
Can you help us uncover hidden resources in our collection and make them discoverable to the wider public? Do you enjoy bringing order and care to a library collection?
We are a small team who are passionate about supporting our colleagues and enabling the public to learn from our unique collection covering topics ranging across transport, social history, art, design, and architecture. As Librarian (Collections project) you will work together with us on a project to assess and catalogue unrecorded material held at our Library store.
As plans are being developed for a new Library space at the Museum Depot, it is time to review the material we already hold there. With our current team maintaining the library service at Covent Garden and working on this project, we hope you can help us meet this challenge.
This is an opportunity to work with special collections, including a range of material types dating from the 19th century onwards. Whether you have already specialised in this area of work or are looking to gain more experience, you will bring your knowledge of collection management and library cataloguing to help develop and accurately describe our collection. Highly organised and self-motivated, you will also be able to work collaboratively with colleagues as part of a team.
Key Accountabilities
* Assess material according to the Library’s Collection Development Policy to maintain the relevancy of the Library collection for researchers.
* Manage, organise and package collection items according to LTM guidelines and recognised professional practice to ensure the long-term preservation of material for future research.
* Catalogue Library collection items according to LTM instructions and international library standards so that resources are discoverable to researchers. We work in a non-MARC system (Soutron) following RDA and using an in-house classification scheme and subject headings.
* Contribute to the wider management of the project by organising work to meet deadlines, reporting on progress, supervising the Library Assistant and volunteers as required and working collaboratively to develop ideas and overcome issues.
