Are you passionate about social justice and empowering older people to shape their city?
The Elders Council of Newcastle is looking for an inspiring leader to join us as our Executive Officer. This is a rare opportunity to take the helm of a small but highly impactful organisation, working with older people to influence policy, improve services, and make Newcastle a truly age-friendly city.
This is an excellent opportunity for a leader ready to make a real difference. We also welcome proposals from individuals or organisations considering a secondment arrangement, providing an opportunity to collaborate with and support the Elders Council during this exciting period of change and transition.
About Us
The Elders Council is an organisation of older people working for older people. We are one of only two such organisations in England. For over 25 years, we have amplified the voices of older adults in Newcastle, ensuring that their insights and aspirations drive positive change. With a small staff team and a dedicated group of volunteers, we tackle ageism and champion active civic engagement in the city.
Our mission is ambitious, and we use established links to work with Newcastle City Council, local universities, community organisations, and national networks to achieve our goals.
The Role
As Executive Officer, you will lead the Elders Council, working closely with our Board of Trustees, members, and partners. Key responsibilities include:
1. Shaping and delivering the organisation’s strategic plan.
2. Managing all operational matters, including budgets, external contracts, and recruitment.
3. Maintaining our service level agreement with Newcastle City Council.
4. Developing and overseeing innovative programmes and projects to empower older people.
5. Working both with and for our members, this being a member-led organisation.
6. Building and sustaining relationships with members, funders, partners, and decision-makers.
7. Leading fundraising and member-recruitment efforts to secure the sustainability of the organisation.
8. Advocating for the diverse needs and aspirations of older people in Newcastle.
This role offers a unique challenge: delivering a bold vision for the city’s older residents while balancing significant resource constraints. You’ll need to inspire and lead a small team of staff and volunteers, manage competing priorities, and find creative ways to achieve impact.
About You
We’re looking for someone who:
1. Is deeply committed to social justice and tackling ageism.
2. Has significant experience working with and for older people from diverse communities.
3. Is a proven leader with the ability to manage budgets, secure funding, promote the organisation and deliver ambitious plans.
4. Communicates confidently and diplomatically, engaging effectively with people at all levels.
5. Can balance the organisation’s rich 25-year legacy with fresh, forward-thinking ideas.
6. Thrives in a collaborative environment and is comfortable navigating competing ideas and strong personalities.
We are working with our recruitment partner, Jobs with Purpose, to find our next Executive Officer.
