Job Duties
This recruitment is for the Pine Chapel Area Headquarters supporting Hampton Roads Harbor Tunnel (HRHT) Operations.
We are seeking individuals interested in joining the HRHT team within the Hampton Roads District who are able to operate power tools and heavy equipment (chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor w/ attachments) and perform manual labor. As a maintenance operator, you will:
1. respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
2. attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control
3. demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely
4. participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
5. complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
6. Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
7. Ability to operate and maintain equipment comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities.
8. Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
9. Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively orally and in writing.
10. Skill in the operation and preventive maintenance of handheld and power tools.
11. Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
12. Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
13. Ability to work inclement weather, accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
14. Safety shoes required.
Additional Considerations
15. Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.
16. Experience performing heavy manual labor and equipment operation such as dump trucks, tractors, loaders, etc.).
17. Experience performing basic preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
18. Familiarity with methods and materials used in highway maintenance.
19. Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up.
20. High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
21. Flagging certification.

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a Class A, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

This position also requires approved safety shoes as a reimbursable expense.
