Specialist Stroke Speech and Language Therapist
We are excited to recruit a permanent full-time Band 6 Stroke Specialist Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to work at Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford, on the South-East London/North-West Kent border. We would consider appointing a developing Specialist SLT with the required profile and enthusiasm. We pride ourselves in being a friendly, proactive and flexible team.
Main Duties of the Job
The successful candidate will work with stroke inpatients as a member of the Stroke MDT and the dedicated stroke SLT team. They would provide specialist SLT management for both the acute and rehabilitation stages of stroke patients' treatment. They will be competent in assessment and treatment of a wide range of swallowing and communication disorders, particularly related to stroke.
The postholder will be an active member of the multidisciplinary stroke team where close MDT working is essential. They will contribute to service development and training including audit/SSNAP targets, and supervision of junior colleagues including SLT Assistants. They will be supervised by the Band 7 Stroke Lead SLT and can maintain strong supervisory links from AHP peers.
Person Specification
Education and Training
* Recognised Speech & Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent
* Health and Care Professions Council - Licence to Practise
* Registered member of the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists
* Successful completion of postgraduate training in dysphagia
* Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses including dysphagia
* Evidence of CPD relevant to role
Experience
* Significant postgraduate experience of working with adult clients with a range of communication and swallowing difficulties
* Postgraduate experience working in an acute hospital setting
* Relevant experience in stroke and acquired neurological difficulties
* Experience of working in a multidisciplinary stroke team
* Experience of giving training and presentations
* Experience of tracheostomy assessment and management
* Experience carrying out videofluoroscopy/FEES assessment including analysis and report writing
Knowledge and Skills
* Knowledge of assessment tools relevant to client group
* Knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to client group
* Knowledge of range of appropriate therapeutic interventions relevant to the client group
* Awareness of standards of clinical record keeping
* Working knowledge of relevant procedures including (vulnerable adults, Mental Capacity Act etc.) and other legal requirements
* Working knowledge of the principles of clinical governance and audit and their application to professional practice
