This role is full-time (37.5 hours per week), with flexibility to consider less than full time arrangements.The appointee would deliver care primarily to paediatric patients but also to adult special care patients who have been referred into the Community Dental Service for care. The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust The Oral and Facial Specialties (OFS) department includes Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, and the Community Dental Service. Our OFS team is made up of enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals supported by a dedicated specialty-secretariat, with office and networked computer facilities. The Community Dental Service cares for the population of Wakefield and District and works across 5 sites. The team comprises of 2 Consultants and a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry, a Specialist in Special Care Dentistry, 1 Senior Dental Officer, 1 level 2 accredited Dental Officer, and 2 Dental Therapists. The specialist paediatric component of the service is led by a consultant in paediatric dentistry and provides specialist care to a wide range of children with complex medical problems, learning difficulties, physical disabilities, inherited and acquired anomalies of the dentition, complex dental traumatic injuries, and complex social problems. The appointee would undertake outpatient consultation and treatment sessions in health centres across Wakefield District where treatment is provided either under local anaesthetic alone or combined with inhalation sedation. For those children who cannot tolerate treatment by either of these modalities, there is a weekly all day general anaesthetic list at Pinderfields General Hospital where exodontia is provided and a fortnightly comprehensive care list. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service currently has 5 consultants, 3 Specialty Doctors, 2 Specialty Registrars and 11 core trainees. The Orthodontic clinical team includes 3 consultants, 2 specialty registrars and 2 orthodontic therapists. We have excellent facilities with up to date clinical, operating and teaching equipment. Our general anaesthetic services, joint orthodontic paediatric planning clinics and cleft multidisciplinary clinics are based in modern and spacious facilities at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield. Main Duties and Responsibilities The Post The Band B Senior Dental Officer will work in partnership with the wider community dental services team and will be responsible for the delivery of high quality, comprehensive, dental care to patients of all ages (majority children) referred into the service across Wakefield District. This will include children and adults with learning difficulties, physical disabilities, mental health problems, medically compromised, severe anxiety, phobias, and traumatic dental injuries. The post holder will be involved in the training and supervision of joint dental foundation and core trainees (JDFCTs). The post holder will also have the opportunity of providing care under general anaesthesia. SCOPE AND RANGE The post holder will provide specialist led oral health care for children within MYTT CDS in accordance with the commissioned service specification. This may include providing comprehensive care and exodontia under general anaesthesia and inhalation sedation. Dental care may be provided in community, hospital or domiciliary settings as a flexible approach will be required in responding to the clinical care needs of these patients. The post holder may be required to travel to other CDS sites in Pontefract, South Kirby and Castleford as required. MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Patient/Client Care To provide high quality comprehensive specialist led oral healthcare for children and adults within MYTT CDS. This will include children and adults who are anxious, have behavioural management problems, have complex medical problems, social problems and/ or learning/physical disabilities. Care will be provided in clinics and domiciliary settings, which will involve driving between establishments and the transportation of appropriate equipment required for such visits. Provision of preventative care and advice to individual patients and their parents/carers. Occasionally this may include the provision of oral health promotion services to groups of patients, parents/carers. Participation in the exodontia general anaesthetic list at Pinderfields Hospital as required. Provision of guidance to parents, carers and teachers on the dental input required into multidisciplinary care plans for children with special needs. Provision of advice and emergency care to all priority groups of patients seen within MYHTCDS. Direction and supervision of Professions Complimentary to dentistry including dental therapist, dental health educators and dental nurses. Liaison with hospital and general dental service colleagues and other health and social service staff in order to co-ordinate the patients service provided by the Community Dental Service with those of other dental and general health services. Working with health professionals and other agencies to raise awareness of the oral health needs of children and young people and to be involved in training. Has knowledge and experience of the legislative framework to provide advice or support on such matters to other members of the dental team Has sufficient knowledge and experience of the financial framework to provide advice or support on such matters to other members of the dental team Provides leadership and training in specific areas to a range of dental staff Understands responsibility for health and safety issues and can advise others in the service on these issues Participates and leads in Governance projects Teaching and Training Organises clinical training and teaching/supervision programmes or sessions and supports others in that role Organises delivery of dental epidemiology programmes and may be involved in data analysis and reporting Information Management Liaison with hospital and general dental service colleagues and other health and social care services in order to co-ordinate the patient services provided by the CDS with those of other dental and general health services. The completion of associated clinical records and statistical returns as required To be aware of and apply Trust policies and procedures within the scope of delegated responsibility. Contribute to the development of the knowledge and evidence base for delivering effective clinical care. To be involved in assurances of achievement with local and national standards and quality indicators including those within the performance framework of the Care Quality Commission. POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT Participation in dental audit, clinical governance and Trust and service training events organised for all staff, including the trusts mandatory training programme. Participation in continuing professional development and trust mandatory training as required by regulation and personal requirements as highlighted during the development of a personal development plan. Participate in annual performance review (appraisal) and the development and implementation of a personal development plan in line with organisational and personal objectives. To adapt flexibly to changes that occur in the service and assist in implementing such changes, as agreed with the commissioners. Take responsibility for identifying risks and taking action to control them as appropriate to the post. To work to all policies and procedures in accordance with Trust guidelines including health & safety, patient confidentiality etc. To take reasonable care for his/her own health and safety and that of other persons who may be affected by his/her acts or omissions. The post holder is also required to cooperate with supervisory and managerial staff to ensure that all relevant statutory regulations, policies, codes of practice and departmental safety procedures are adhered to and to attend mandatory training programmes provided by the employing Trust. Mentoring Newly appointed senior medical staff will be offered mentoring opportunities either within the department or within the wider Trust and may be specified by the appointments committee. There is an induction and development programme for all new staff. Continuing Professional Development The Trust requires all its doctors to engage with continuing professional development, guided by the relevant professional associations or Royal Colleges. Time and funding is provided according to departmental and Trust policies, subject to approval through the clinical management structures. There is a programme of mandatory training which all relevant staff must complete as required.
