Department: Emergency Surgical Clinic – Same Day Emergency Clinic (SDEC)

A vacancy has become available within the Emergency Surgical Clinic based in the Maple Centre for a health care assistant who is able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment. The Maple Centre is a new building that is excellently designed and is fully air conditioned providing a perfect working environment for all.
It would be helpful if you have previously worked within a care setting, but we provide a full induction programme and care certificate for those new to the role if you have not already completed this.
It is important that you are willing to learn and develop skills important for the role. We ask our band 2 staff to learn phlebotomy and cannulation and will provide the necessary training to gain these skills in order that you are able to become a fully integrated member of the team.
You will be working closely with the Surgical, Urology, ENT and Orthopaedic on-call teams of doctors and actioning any of their instructions, including liaising with other teams within the hospital.

To provide support to the Nurse Practitioner and doctors in the Emergency Surgical Clinic (ESC) based in the Same Day Emergency Clinic (SDEC) at the new Maple Clinic.
To provide all care for the patient while they are undergoing assessment and treatment.
To safely transfer patients to other wards and departments.

Provision of care to meet health and wellbeing needs
To be aware of and have the ability to discuss and participate in all aspects of direct patient care under the supervision of the nurse in charge as identified in the individual’s plan of care. These activities will include:-
- Supporting/providing the patient with personal and oral hygiene
- Helping the patient with mobility using appropriate handling aids and techniques
- Undertaking a variety of assessments under the direction of the Nurse Practitioner
- Ensuring the patient’s nutritional needs are met and assistance provided when required.
Interventions and treatments
Once appropriate training has been received and competency developed, undertake a number of interventions and treatments including:
- Taking a sample of blood
- Taking a sample of urine and catheter sample
- Recording an ECG trace
- Applying simple wound dressings
Communication
- To greet and receive patients/relatives in a courteous and helpful manner
- To provide and receive messages accurately and in a way that is understood by the recipient, referring issues to the appropriate person where necessary.
- Ensure the Electronic Patient Record is accurate, update where necessary and print appropriate labels and wristband.
Health, Safety and Security
- To participate in promoting a safe environment for patients and staff. Maintaining a safe working condition at all times in accordance with the Health and Safety Act and Trust policies.
- Ensure equipment is kept clean and ready for use. Keep all storage areas clean and stocked up
- Actively demonstrate an adherence to the Infection Control policy ensuring compliance with hand hygiene.
Personal and People Development
- To contribute to own personal development and to work towards and maintain a full outline for the post within the knowledge and skills framework
- To actively participate in other relevant training specific to the role
- To participate in agreed learning activities
- To actively participate in an annual appraisal and to provide evidence to demonstrate achievement.
