Job summary
EPA Microbiology is the only Microbiology laboratory in the county! We provide clinical diagnostic services across Norfolk including 3 separate Trusts. This busy, exciting and essential service is run by an efficient and closely knit team, and the laboratory is very focused on staff wellbeing and teamwork.
We would love to get someone recruited who will integrate well into this dynamic, with previous lab experience to help you hit the ground running and also contribute to improving the service.
Staff will be expected to participate in the departmental rota. We work Monday to Friday on 3 shifts - early (8am-4pm) core (9am-5pm) and late (12pm-8pm), and on 8am-4pm on Saturdays and Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Main duties of the job
Performing routine laboratory procedures in all areas of the Bacteriology Laboratory according to laboratory policies and Standard Operating Procedures.
Performing plate reading to identify significant isolates, set up and interpret antibiotic sensitivity testing.
Perform a range of automated techniques throughout the department including MS and automated MIC determination.
Assist in training of staff and maintenance of the departmental ISO 15189 accreditation.
Be able to work both autonomously and as part of the Bacteriology team.
Participate in the Microbiology on-call service.
Support trainees, BMS and BMSW staff within the department.
Complete ongoing service training including CPD.
Work with leadership team to plan workload and achieve collective goals.
Experience in quality management solutions is desirable.

Job responsibilities
14. To ensure efficient day to day operation of a section of the Microbiology service and associated support services, including maintenance of expensive stocks and high value equipment.
15. To manage the deployment of staff within the service. Supervise and give training to new, junior staff and students.
16. Act as a section lead with specialist knowledge, responsible for urgent, routine and specialised work including interpretation of test results. To ensure accurate and timely test reports are provided to users in line with Departmental and Trust policies.
17. Responsible for maintenance of technical standards, both internally and through external quality assurance schemes as required for UKAS Accreditation. Implement appropriate corrective action when audits reveal non-compliances.
18. Manage and maintain specialised databases in LIS (Lab Information System) and patient storage databases on a daily basis.
19. Responsible for input and authorisation of patient data and results to include other colleagues work.
20. Participate in clinical trials and evaluation of new equipment and consumable items in association with other members of medical and technical staff.
21. Educate and train all grades of staff as required within their specialised area
