East Lothian Council are keen to continue its tradition of harnessing and developing the talent of people in the local area and as such are looking to recruit an apprentice in the following trade/discipline:
* Apprentice Painter – 2 Positions
This vacancy is restricted to applicants who currently live within the boundary of East Lothian and are aged 16 or over on or after 18 August 2025 .
All candidates indicating in their application that they are from a care experienced background, or have a disability are guaranteed an interview IF they meet the minimum essential criteria required for the job (as specified on the Person Specification).
Applicants should have achieved, or be expected to achieve, National 4 or above in English, Maths and one other subject. Standard Grades in subjects above will also be accepted at credit/general level 1-4, or A-C.
Applicants must provide certified proof of the qualifications noted above at Stage 2 of the process. Please note National 4 qualifications/predicted National 5 qualifications will be accepted but only if verified in writing by your school.
Applicants who meet the essential criteria will be required to pass an aptitude/written assessment. Following this, top scoring candidates will be invited to attend a face to face interview.
The apprenticeship will run for 4 years and during this period every apprentice will attend an appropriate further education centre to attain the qualification applicable to this trade. Apprentices will work with teams of skilled craft operatives on a variety of different tasks within the trade and will be expected to achieve SVQ Level 3 in relevant trade.
The apprentice will be paid an annual salary of £20,002.47 (£10.37 per hour) during the first year of the apprenticeship (plus any pay awards) which will be increased each year of the remaining 3 years.
Applicants should have a genuine interest in the trade advertised and be able to demonstrate commitment to their own learning and show that they are keen to become a qualified tradesperson.
Permanent training position for 4 years.
Working hours are 37 per week: Monday - Thursday 08:00-16:00, Friday 08:00-15:30
At end of appointment period, East Lothian Council will seek to redeploy to relevant trade position, if available.
To start 18th August 2025
Salary over the 4 years is as follows (plus any pay awards):
Year 1 £20,002.47 per annum (£10.37 per hour)
Year 2 £20,641.70 per annum (£10.70 per hour)
Year 3 £21,919.13 per annum (£11.36 per hour)
Year 4 £23,196.56 per annum (£12.02 per hour)

Job Details
To be trained as an Apprentice Painter carrying out maintenance work for domestic and public buildings owned by East Lothian Council.
