Purpose of the role:
To deputise to the Head of Forestry and work as part of a small team to ensure that the woodland and parkland maintenance is delivered as stipulated by the Head of Forestry, Estate Forestry Advisor and Estate Manager. Oversee the Forestry team in the Heads absence and ensure resources are allocated and all upkeep is delivered in line with relevant legislative and compliance requirements.
Responsibilities:
· Manage the Forestry team in the Head of Forestrys’ absence, ensuring that resources are in place to deliver planned work objectives. Supervise work in line with required legislative requirements and standards to protect staff and members of the public.
· Assist with timber production and liaise with timber merchants and customers over log and Christmas tree sales.
· Planting and maintenance of amenity, parkland and woodland trees.
· Thinning and felling for woodland management and tree risk management.
· Habitat creation and management within the woodland and parkland.
· Squirrel control.
· Firewood production and selling.
· Christmas tree growing and selling.
· Fencing.
· Hedge trimming.
· Ploughing, cultivation and sowing of wild bird seed mixes.
· Assisting the property maintenance team and the garden team.
· Ensure health and safety considerations are implemented and adhered to when works are executed, including managing risk assessments, method statements and safe operating procedures.
· Complete all required administration and reporting including logbooks, chemical storage records, maintenance records and risk and method statements.
· Manage, monitor and report on the performance of maintenance contracts, ensuring high standards and industry practices are being upheld. Engage with contractors to provide resolution in a timely manner where issues are identified. Source external contractors as agreed with the Estate Manager.
· Manage and develop the team in the Heads of Forestry’s absence, including recruitment, on-boarding, training and performance management.
· Liaise with the Estate Manager and Estate Forestry Advisor in the Head of Forestrys’ absence and other teams to ensure all planned work affecting other departments and schedules is communicated.
Undertake ad hoc tasks as required
Knowledge and experience:
· 3+ years in a related position. This could be in forestry, environmental, conservation, horticulture, arboriculture, land or estate management
· First Aid +F
· Brush cutting and strimming
· Knapsack spraying
· Small tree felling (essential requirement for all applicants)
· Medium tree felling
· Winching
· Basic tree inspection
· Tractor driving
· Tractor-mounted spraying
· Knowledge of relevant legislation e.g. H&S
· Knowledge & interest in caring for historic parkland.
· IT, Word and Excel, Outlook
· Driving Licence.
