Main duties of the job
The postholder's duties will be primarily at the Neurophysiology department at the John Radcliffe Hospital. This post's focus is a contribution to the EEG video-telemetry service and reporting of sleep studies. This includes epilepsy pre-surgical assessment utilising intracranial recording (adult intracranial only). The post holder will work closely with the multidisciplinary teams dealing with epilepsy and sleep disorders in the trust and as part of the Children's Epilepsy Surgery Network (CESS). There is currently no on-call commitment.
The principal duties of the post-holders will be to contribute to the running of the diagnostic EEG, paediatric and adult epilepsy (including pre-surgical evaluation), sleep disorders in adults and children.
The post-holders will be required to participate in the urgent adult and paediatric neurophysiology rota, which at present, provides an in-hours weekday service, and provides cover during colleagues' leave of absence. The day-to-day activities will include performing or supervising reporting of standard EEG and video-telemetry, supporting clinical meetings and case discussions, and conducting EMG or other specialty clinics. The post-holders will also be responsible for supervising and guiding registrar and physiologists within the Neurophysiology department.
Person Specification
Qualifications/Training
* GMC Full registration and licence to practice
* MRCP or equivalent.
* Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCT) in Clinical Neurophysiology and/or Neurology; OR Registration on GMC Specialist Register in Clinical Neurophysiology and/or Neurology; OR within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview.
* Higher Medical Degree (PhD, MD or equivalent)
* Specialist sleep accreditation
* Specialist epilepsy accreditation
* Electromyography/Nerve Conduction competency.
Experience
* General training in Clinical Neurophysiology to specialist level or equivalent
* Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.
* Experience of consultant responsibilities in a tertiary neurosciences centre
Skills and Knowledge
* Excellent leadership skills. Evidence of ability to lead a clinical team at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital.
* Effective administrative and time management skills. Training in clinical management.
* Knowledge of the organisation of the NHS and the Government's agenda.
* Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork
* Computing skills, ability to use word processor, spreadsheet programme. Demonstrable achievements in the development or integration of digital systems into clinical practice.
* Good spoken and written English.
* Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills to undertake effectively the role of consultant in a large teaching hospital
* Experience of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training of undergraduates and trainees.
* Evidence of effective and sustained contribution to clinical governance, clinical risk management and clinical audit activities
* Evidence of leadership outside of the NHS
* Technical expertise in neurophysiology diagnostic software
* Evidence of recent 360 degree appraisal
