The opportunity This is an exciting opportunity to join the battery pack electrical system design team in Caterpillar's Electrification Energy Solutions (EES) division as a Control Systems Engineer. You will be joining the team that designs and validates the electrical architecture of the battery packs that power Caterpillar's cutting-edge electric machines. What you will do: - Support sub-system FMEAs, documenting potential failure modes, identifying and completing design and validation actions and managing subsequent updates. - Collaborate with team members to gather and develop requirements for the verification to be completed on Electrical architecture or battery packs. - Plan and execute verification and validation testing for battery pack electronics / control system hardware, documenting these results accurately. - Troubleshoot and resolve electronics / control system issues encountered during pack / machine running. - Conduct risk assessments for the battery pack electrical team lab space, creating safe systems of work to conduct testing safely. - Collaborating with those in supporting teams to ensure that testing can take place safely, effectively and on schedule. - Creating high level summaries on issue status, for sharing with the leadership team. What you have: Product Testing - Level Basic Understanding: - Ability to create test environments and conduct validation within an embedded electrical system. - Describes common errors that are uncovered by product testing. - Ability to use testing tools required in electrical controls systems. - Ability to design a test plan and write a test report. Technical Troubleshooting - Level Basic Understanding: - Describes problem identification, reporting and escalation procedures. - Explains the underlying concept of using a systematic approach to solve technical problems. - Identifies available resources and support systems for troubleshooting. - Describes common hardware, software and communication problems in order to find ways to resolve issues. Problem Solving - Working Knowledge: - Identifies and documents specific problems and resolution alternatives. - Examines a specific problem and understands the perspective of each involved stakeholder. - Develops alternative techniques for assessing accuracy and relevance of information. - Helps to analyze risks and benefits of alternative approaches and obtain decision on resolution. - Uses fact-finding techniques and diagnostic tools to identify problems. Embedded Systems - Level Basic Understanding: - Cites examples of embedded systems used in daily operation. - Explains the major characteristics and components of embedded systems. - Highlights the several applications of embedded systems. - Lists out the advantages and disadvantages associated with embedded systems. Communicating Complex Concepts - Level Working Knowledge: - Uses comparisons to familiar ideas when introducing a technical or novel feature. - Separates fundamental concepts from supporting details in explaining a product or service. - Explains products and services with little or no use of technical jargon or advanced vocabulary. - Emphasizes the most important facts or features of a product or service. - Perceives lack of audience comprehension; further simplifies explanation when needed. Additional Information: - Less than 10% travel requirement. - This position is currently a hybrid in-office work model, requiring a 3-day weekly office presence onsite at our Peterborough office and remote work for the remaining days.
