Job summary
Applicationsare invited from suitably qualified Consultant Paediatricians (or those withequivalent experience and qualifications) for the part time post (2PA per week)of Designated Doctor, Peninsula Child Death Overview.
This role ispart of the Child Death Review function that is statutory across England asrequired by Chapter 5 of Working Together to Safeguard Children (2015).
Main duties of the job
Providingspecialist paediatric advice to the Chair of the Child Death Overview Panel andjoint agency response nurse practitioners. The SW Peninsula has one OverviewPanel covering Devon, Cornwall, Plymouth and Torbay. The Designated Doctor isresponsible for:
1. Providingspecialist paediatric advice to the Chair of the Overview Panel andmulti-agency response practitioners.
2. Liaisingwith the Panel Coordinator and Chair for the collation and analysis of data
3. Monitoringthe actions and recommendations arising from CDOP.
4. Providingadvice to the Trust Named Doctors and be responsible for Peninsula nameddoctors network meetings.
5. ProvidingClinical Supervision for the Specialist Joint Agency response Nurses.
Most of thepreparatory documentation will have been completed by the CDOP administrativeoffice but it is anticipated that, prior to each meeting of the child DeathOverview Panel, one PA of professional time will be required for review ofdocumentation.
Applicantsshould at minimum:
6. Hold senior Paediatric Consultant status orequivalent
7. Be able to demonstrate a sound understanding ofChild Death Review and Child Safeguarding procedures.
8. Be able to demonstrate excellent negotiating andleadership skills.

9. The Designated Doctor for Child Death Review should:
10. senior Consultant status or equivalent in a Trust/Organisation hosting children's services.
11. undergone higher professional training in paediatrics.
12. substantial clinical experience as a Consultant in the field of safeguarding children and substantial experience of the law applying to children and in the court process.
13. be clinically active in the field of safeguarding children as part of their clinical commitments. The CDOP will require clear guidance on any safeguarding concerns.
14. have good negotiating and leadership skills
15. had experience in the management of sudden unexpected death in infancy
