The Merchant Taylors’ Company is one of the Great 12 Livery Companies. It has a Charter and a heritage dating back to the fourteenth century and is guided by a philosophy relevant to the modern day. Merchant Taylors' is a philanthropic organisation in all that it does. Its focus is on education, care of the elderly and charitable activity, funded from its extensive property portfolio, the effective management and administration of a number of trusts and investments, including operating Merchant Taylors' events at 30 Threadneedle Street.
The role of the Clerk is to deliver the strategy set by the Master, Wardens and Court (the Board) to generate a strong, sustainable and growing charitable donation stream from the Company’s resources and activities. The Clerk acts as the senior executive head of the various businesses and is closely engaged with the educational and care strategy. There are therefore many professional relationships to maintain and cultivate.
The Clerk is also responsible for organising and participating in the significant ceremonial, social and civic activities of the Company across the City and with the Livery movement and for ensuring its continuing positive engagement with its Livery, Freemen and Apprentices.
This fulfilling and challenging role will suit a candidate with demonstrable success in their field, being a capable manager and administrator with the highest standards of integrity and competence. Capable of setting and operating a budget, they will also demonstrate the commercial acumen to recognise and deliver on opportunities. However, the key to success in this role will be the ability to manage and maintain effective relationships at all levels, whether with Court, Livery, Freemen, Apprentices or Staff, whilst delivering the Company Strategy.
