This role is based in the UK. At the SKAO we are coordinating a global effort to deliver one of the largest science facilities on the planet. Come and join us The Head of Health and Safety (H&S) will provide strong leadership and professional expertise to drive best in class performance. The post holder will partner with senior leadership and H&S professionals within SARAO and CSIRO to advance a culture of Health &Safety compliance throughout SKAO, leading on planning and implementation of key initiatives and programmes. The role will ensure a H&S compliant work environment for every member of staff, visitor and contractor at HQ, providing technical and well-being expertise, support safety processes for our operational facilities, and ensure proper reporting practices of all H&S related matters. This position is responsible is key in collaborating across SKAO to ensure compliance and adherence to the global SKAO Safety Management Plan. In addition to strategic responsibilities the post holder will facilitate occupational health and safety services in collaboration with Facilities Management and HR, undertake H&S tasks relating to the operation of the SKAO HQ and developing relevant H&S policies and travel procedures for SKAO staff. This role will be based at the SKAO Global Headquarters at the iconic Jodrell Bank Observatory, Cheshire, UK. This role requires the post holder to work across different time zones and, in line with SKAO policy, flexible working hours will be supported in agreement with the line manager. Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities and Duties Reporting to the Director of Assurance, the post holder will: Lead SKAO in collaboration with key stakeholders across SARAO and CSIRO in the development, implementation and review of SKA relevant policies and procedures in order to create harmonisation and a single safety culture Provide H&S input to the preparation of tenders and in the pre-contract stages of new contracts Maintain HQ policies, procedures and advice, including travel and personal security. Ensure HQ operational compliance with UK health & safety legislation Establish, implement and maintain H&S programmes for HQ staff, initiating programmes in areas of staff well-being. Mandatory Knowledge, Skills and Experience NEBOSH National or BSC Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, or equivalent; Membership of, or certification from, the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) or equivalent. Experienced in best-in-class policy and practice regarding Health & Safety. Experience of implementing employee well-being programmes. Experience of working in a collaborative environment, influencing at all levels across different countries in a culturally diverse matrix organisation. Experience of working within an organisation during periods of significant change embedding a culture of Safety First. Excellent H&S competence with a track record of proactively identifying and addressing H&S risks and issues. Experience of protecting employee health, safety & well-being, ensuring workplace risks are properly controlled. Excellent analytical,report writing and presentation skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Effective written and verbal English skills to be able to deliver presentations and trainings.
