This is an exciting and unique opportunity for an experienced band 6 or existing band 7 to develop new clinical skills and expertise working with Deaf young people with mental health difficulties. This role will involve working National Deaf Child Mental Health Inpatient unit, Corner House completing full Occupational Therapy assessments and providing both individual and group interventions to meet the needs of the young people age 11-18.
The unit is a unique national inpatient resource supporting Deaf young people providing pathways including complex mental health treatment, complex assessment and treatment review and second opinion.
The unit has a part time band 5 Occupational Therapist and a full time Occupation Therapy Technician/ apprentice who will support delivery of the Occupational Therapy interventions.
Although this post would be suitable for a Deaf or BSL using member of staff, this is not essential and Deaf Awareness and training in British Sign Language will be provided for the successful candidate alongside BSL interpreter support.
Regular supervision will be provided by an experienced CAMHS OT with expertise in working with Deaf young people and the postholder will have membership of the trustwide CAMHS CPD group.
The postholder should have significant experience working as an occupational therapist either in mental health, or within the deaf community.
Main duties of the job
* To provide a specialist occupational therapy service to Deaf children and their families in the NDCAMHS inpatient unit.
* To manage clients with complex needs, using evidence based, client-centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
* To provide OT flexibly across a variety of treatment programmes including individual and group work.
* To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of the service, holding responsibility for defined projects.
* To participate in and contribute to local service development and strategy.
* To contribute to the Trustwide occupational therapy strategy and development forums.
* To supervise junior staff and OT students on fieldwork placements.
* To undertake regular audit and R&D activities.
* To provide training and support for other professionals including school based Occupational Therapy and Education staff.

Clinical
* To apply a high level of understanding of the effects of disability on occupational performance and provide training and advice on lifestyles changes and environmental solutions to the service users social and physical needs.
* To promote equality of outcome for service users that reflect their mental health needs and those of ethnicity, gender, culture physical health and age.
* To promote social inclusion and physical and mental well-being using evidence based practice. This is underpinned by the principles of hope and recovery, health promotion and relapse prevention.
* To independently manage a clinical caseload of service users with complex mental health needs, taking on the role of care co-ordinator and/or vocational lead where relevant.
