An exciting opportunity exists to provide Automation Engineering support to a fast-paced R&D environment, taking ownership on control system solutions during the development and operation of new and existing R&D assets across Johnson Matthey’s Teesside sites (predominantly Billingham site).
You would also provide Software and Controls guidance for internally delivered projects; these projects could be modifications and upgrades to existing legacy systems or completely new installations. Most of your time will be spent on software orientated tasks including but not limited to scoping of new automation improvements, offline Automation builds awaiting download, fault finding and testing of code (both offline and online), implementing changes to the existing Controls Infrastructure in line with actions arising from Management of Change requests.

Your responsibilities:
1. As an Automation Engineer within an enthusiastic, driven site improvement team, you will be responsible for designing, installing, managing, and maintaining software on Allen Bradley and Siemens PLC and DCS systems respectively. A unique Page 2/8chance for a determined individual who strives to make a difference. Must be capable to fault find, modify, and programme Allen Bradley PLC solutions. Some knowledge of PCS7 or Emerson DeltaV could also be of huge benefit to the business.
2. Identifying design solutions to existing complex legacy automation solutions and to continuously improve the effectiveness and reliability of bespoke Research Engineering equipment based on upgrade simplification. Supports the Automation Lead in the preparation of project proposals and business cases.
3. Have a determination to develop existing Automation skills and have a flexible attitude to owning and resolving any control system issue onsite. Capable of building strong relationships with peers and JM research community.
4. Provide expert knowledge of SCADA systems, JM installed base predominantly uses RSLogix 5000 and InTouch solutions with varying versions, however many other legacy Allen Bradley solutions exist onsite (Specview, RSview, Workbench). MTL Most and Eurotherm 2500 also onsite. Experience of industrial comms protocols such as Modbus and Profibus for connecting field devices and extracting data desirable.
5. Supporting the projects teams at initial design stages to offer advice on the selection of software and control equipment to ensure improved levels of plant reliability and maintainability, once installed implement and continually review the controls strategy to ensure business needs are met.
6. Implement recognised standards with regards alarm management and safety related control functions so that process safety is delivered. A basic understanding of ESD systems and implementing code to reflect process safety design.
7. Excellent understanding of all Levels of Automation based on the Purdue Model, some experience of all Levels from 0-3, plus some exposure to cyber security standards such as IEC 62443. IT/OT networking skills would be desirable.
Requirements for the role:
8. Hold a formal IT/Electronic/controls qualification such as Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent recognised training.
9. Have skills in Programmable logic controllers (PLC) (Siemens, Allen Bradley), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) & preferably experience with InTouch and RSLogix5000.
10. Page 3/8•ECI experience in a manufacturing/chemical facilities/plant within a software/controls function.
11. Experience in network infrastructure, architecture, and administration Knowledge and experience.
12. Ability to read and understand Instrument and electrical drawings.
13. Adaptable and Flexible behaviours due to the unique nature of solutions quickly delivered onsite.
