We are seeking a dynamic, high performing individual with operational and management experience and a proven track record of delivering progressive change. As the Superintendent Pharmacist for the newly created subsidiary business, you will be responsible for delivering a safe and high quality service in line with GPhC standards. You will also be responsible for achieving Key Performance Indicators within budget and delivering the commercial strategy for the subsidiary.

Main duties of the job
1. To ensure the safe, efficient and effective delivery of all aspects of the out-patient pharmacy service in accordance with national and local standards.
2. To have delegated budgetary accountability for ordering and management of all medicines within the outpatient dispensary.
3. To advise the PharmaServices Board on appropriate workforce plans, providing sufficient staff who are trained and competent for their role.
4. To provide leadership and expert advice, acting as a role model for the staff and for the business.
5. To fulfil the regulatory and statutory responsibilities as required by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).
6. To develop a high quality, safe and timely outpatient dispensary service for patients.
7. To identify and successfully manage risks and incidents.
8. To develop effective working relationships with prescribers.
9. To ensure the optimisation and development of the overall profitability of the business.
10. To actively monitor and report progress against KPIs to the Board each month.
About us
Our new outpatient pharmacy - Newcastle Pharmacy Services - will operate from 1 December 2024 as a subsidiary of the Trust. This follows an announcement from Lloyds in August 2024, that it was withdrawing from its 64 Lloyds Pharmacy-branded hospital pharmacy sites across the country, including those at the RVI and Freeman Hospitals.
Job responsibilities
1. Perform the duties and responsibilities of the Superintendent Pharmacist for the outpatient pharmacies as required by the Pharmacy Regulator - the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and all applicable legislation.
2. Perform the duties as the Controlled Drug Accountable Officer for the outpatient pharmacies.
3. Accountable for the safe purchase, receipt, storage, sale & supply of all medicines within the outpatient pharmacies.
4. Responsible for the professional management of the outpatient pharmacies at the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital.
5. Lead a team of pharmaceutical professionals and ensure compliance of standard operating procedures and up-to-date training is maintained for staff.
6. To ensure pharmacy services are delivered within budget and manage the operational finances associated with the delivery of the service, such as staffing and drug expenditure in line with agreed budgets.
7. Ensure all key performance indicators are met, taking remedial action to address and improve any performance issues.
8. Drive improvements in quality & safety, innovation, and levels of stakeholder satisfaction.
9. Work with key stakeholders to adapt outpatient pharmacy service in response to changing service needs to ensure services are progressive, responsive to internal and external demand, are patient focused, safe, efficient and effective.
10. Develop strategies and plans to enable the effective recruitment, retention, development and training of staff.
11. Ensure errors, complaints and incidents are investigated and managed.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
* BPharm / MPharm/ BSc (Pharmacy) or equivalent
* Registered Pharmacist with General Pharmaceutical Council
* Specialist higher degree or portfolio of experience at senior managerial level
* Postgraduate qualification in business or management or equivalent experience
* Clinical Masters
Knowledge & Experience
* Extensive knowledge of relevant regulations and legislation relating to medicines
* Knowledge of the requirements of national organisations involved in pharmacy e.g. DoH, RPS
* Extensive experience of running a pharmacy business or working at a senior level within a pharmacy department in an NHS Trust
* Commercially aware and understand how to grow and maintain a pharmacy business
* Knowledge of financial reporting and budget statements
* Knowledge of Pharmacy computer systems e.g. CMM/Ascribe etc
* Have experience of disciplinary matters and be able to impart results from them to staff in an appropriate and considered manner
* Demonstrate emotional maturity and resilience when dealing with complex issues
* Experience of working with senior healthcare professionals outside of Pharmacy
* Experience of managing large number of staff
* Experience of managing teams
* Significant experience of performing and supervising projects
* Evidence of a range of publications (papers or posters) relevant to stage of career
