Consultant Radiographer in Breast Imaging
The post holder will provide interpretation and reporting of all mammographic and ultrasound imaging of the breast and axilla in the breast clinic and act as an independent film reader.
The post holder will also be responsible for aspiration and breast lesion localizations, needle core biopsies, and vacuum-assisted procedures under x-ray and ultrasound guidance. They will fulfill the quality standards required by the National Health Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) and confirm this by undertaking audit and clinical governance activities.
The post holder will be required to lead, supervise, mentor, and develop other team members, providing a model of expert practice in terms of knowledge and experience and use clinical research as a basis to extend the scope of practice within the unit. They will act as a source of expert professional advice to medical consultants, other professionals, multi-disciplinary groups, patients, and their carers.
They will be required to provide cover for some of the Breast Radiologists' duties when they are unavailable to ensure the continuity of the service.

Job responsibilities
The following duties are specific skills required in relation to Consultant Radiographer in Breast Imaging status. All the skills will be applicable to working within the NHSBSP and the symptomatic service.
1. The Consultant Radiographer in Breast Imaging will practice at a consultant level providing specialist expert care for patients and having a high degree of autonomy.
2. To report including description of image, suggested diagnosis, and advice recommending further actions for the patient.
3. Work as an unsupervised clinical practitioner exercising a high degree of personal and professional autonomy, acting and demonstrating advanced clinical competence, decision making, and a knowledge base beyond those associated with conventional radiographer roles.
4. To accurately complete the client/patient documentation required during diagnostic work and following invasive procedures.
5. To assist in the provision of one-stop clinics for patients on a regular basis working alongside consultant surgeons.
6. To undertake assessment of women recalled under the NHSBSP according to all guidance and quality standards required by that Programme.
7. To competently and independently perform interventional procedures such as local anaesthesia administration, skin incisions, ultrasound guided core biopsies, and cyst aspirations.
8. To handle any x-ray breast tissue specimens during core biopsies.
9. To perform ultrasound examinations of the breast and axillae and simultaneously undertake biopsies.
10. Directing the use of specialized mammographic equipment.
11. Ultrasound guided/stereotactic guided localizations.
12. Regular attendance and participation at the weekly breast MDM.
13. To audit one's own mammography reporting.
14. To discuss the patient's clinical history and present symptoms.
15. Contribute and assist with the strategic and operational development of the imaging service.
16. Have direct management of patient care within the triple assessment team.
17. Manage a caseload of mammography reporting, ultrasound scanning, image guided biopsy, and localization procedures.
18. Demonstrate commitment to IWL principles and flexible working patterns.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* DCR, BSc Radiography or Equivalent
* Qualification in 3 advanced practice disciplines; Image Interpretation, Interventional Procedures, and Ultrasound of the Breast
* Full Masters level qualification in Mammography. Candidates working towards masters will be considered for shortlisting.
* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
* Clinical Registration with the HCPC
* Specialist training working towards or having achieved Doctoral Level Qualification
* Qualification in clinical examination of the Breast
* Advanced communication skills.
* Post graduate courses/qualifications in management/leadership
* Post graduate teaching qualification
Knowledge and Experience
* Significant Mammography experience at Advanced Practitioner level
* Evidence of at least 12 months autonomous practice post qualification in 3 advanced practice disciplines in Breast.
* Significant experience of patient review and assessment.
* Experience of working with clinicians and securing their engagement.
* Evidence of participation in quality improvement/audit.
* Formal or informal teaching experience.
* Significant experience of working within Mammography and the NHSBSP.
