Surbiton High School is seeking an enthusiastic and inspiring part-time Teacher of Classics to join our thriving and well-established department. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to a dynamic team that delivers Latin, Classical Civilisation, and Classical Greek across the curriculum.
Start Date:
September 2025
Tenure:
Permanent, Part-time (3 days per week)
Responsibilities:
1. Teach Latin, Classical Greek, and Classical Civilisation to students across various year groups.
2. Support students in achieving high academic standards, with a focus on GCSE and A-level outcomes.
3. Contribute to the development of the Classics curriculum and participate in departmental activities.
4. Engage students through co-curricular clubs and competitions related to Classics.
5. Organize and lead educational trips to relevant historical sites and museums.
About the Department:
The Classics department is well-established, with 5 members of staff and a strong record of academic success. In 2024, 91% of pupils achieved grades 7-9 in GCSE Latin, and 100% of the last year's Classical Civilisation cohort achieved an A or A*. We teach all pupils Latin in year 7, using the Cambridge Latin Course Book 1, and continue with the De Romanis 1 textbook in year 8. Classical Civilisation is integrated into Latin lessons in Key Stage 3, and we offer Latin, Classical Greek, and Classical Civilisation at GCSE and A-level.
There is a vibrant Classics community within the school, fostered by a range of co-curricular clubs, including year 7 Myth Makers and the Senior Classics Society. We enter Classical reading competitions and run an annual Ancient World Day for year 7. The department organizes trips to the Ashmolean Museum, British Museum, and Bath, as well as theatre shows and events in London. We also offer trips to Italy and Greece for immersive learning experiences.
