Environmental Specialist - Birmingham, AL
The duties of the corporate Environmental Specialist are to provide environmental regulatory technical support for the operation of Southern Nuclear fleet and construction of new nuclear projects. The position has a wide range of duties including ensuring environmental compliance with environmental rules and regulations, compliance oversight, identifying and resolving environmental issues, maintenance and renewal of permits, routine and non-routine reporting, develop and support site and corporate environmental program and procedure implementation. In addition to the permitting and compliance duties, Environmental Affairs serves as the Southern Nuclear point of contact with Federal, State, and local environmental agencies, as well as Alabama Power, Georgia Power Environmental Affairs, and Southern Company Services peer organization. Environmental Affairs also performs the National Environmental Policy Act reviews for Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing impacts, re-licensing efforts and new nuclear project development. This position will also be responsible for developing and maintaining constructive relationships with the Environmental Affairs Departments in the Operating Companies within Southern Company. Depending on skills, education, experience and background, this position will be filled as an Engineer or Environmental Specialist.
Job Experience and Education
* Bachelor Degree or higher in Engineering or in a Related Technical Area (4 year degree REQUIRED; Accepted Technical degrees are: Environmental Science, Geology, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Health Physics, and related Physical Sciences)
* PE certification or CHMM is a PLUS
* Experience with environmental program implementation associated with large scale construction projects is a plus
* Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in utility (nuclear or fossil) environmental compliance DESIRED
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications desired.

* Write procedures and guidelines for implementing environmental programs
* Develop relationships with the other Southern Company operating companies, SCS Environmental Affairs and related industry organizations
