Applications are invited for 2 Band 4 Healthcare Science Associate posts in the Newcastle Genetics Laboratories. The successful candidates will be motivated and reliable individuals and will join a team of around 80 Scientific and Technical staff.
The Newcastle Genetics laboratories form part of the Yorkshire and North East Genomic Laboratory Hub. In response to NHS England's recent Strategy and Service Specification for the future of Genomics services in England, Newcastle Hospitals, Leeds Teaching Hospitals, Sheffield Children's Trust and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals have formed the Yorkshire and North East Genomics Laboratory Hub; an exciting collaboration to provide services for Genomics across Yorkshire and Humber and the North. The combined size of our geography makes this the largest collaboration in the country with the Trusts offering a range of both general and specialist hospital services with excellent clinical outcomes for patients. We have an international reputation for excellence in specialist care, research and academic training.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicants will support Clinical Scientists and Genetic Technologists in delivering genetic testing for a range of inherited and acquired conditions. The roles will involve processing of samples referred for a broad range of molecular genetic and cytogenetic tests, in addition to carrying out other routine technical duties. Excellent communication, team working and organisational skills are essential.
Job responsibilities
* Processing of samples referred for a broad range of molecular genetics and cytogenetic tests guided by clearly defined policies and procedures.
* Carry out routine laboratory house-keeping roles such as equipment maintenance, preparation of solutions, waste disposal and sample transport.
Applicants must have a Foundation degree in Healthcare Science or training and experience to the level of NVQ3 along with theoretical or practical training to diploma level. Good laboratory bench skills and experience of working in a busy laboratory are essential. Applicants should have a mature attitude and an appreciation of the importance of genetic testing to patients and their families.

Person Specification
Knowledge
* Basic understanding of Health and Safety and Manual Handling.
* Basic scientific knowledge through general education.

* Good laboratory bench skills.
* Communication and organisational skills.
* Basic computer skills.
Experience
* Previous laboratory experience.
Qualifications
* Foundation degree, or equivalent experience with training and experience to NVQ level 3 with theoretical and practical training to diploma level.
