Founded in 1884 as an agent of The Football Association (The FA), we act as the governing body for football within the now historic, rural county of Cumberland. For the last 140 years, we have been the custodians and developers of the game within Cumberland. We are a limited company, affiliated to the FA, but independently responsible for developing and governing the game at a local level within the various formats (male, female, recreational, veterans, walking, and disability football) and for supporting the local leagues, clubs, coaches, match officials and volunteers who help administrate the game.
As we look to the future, we acknowledge our history and development, but are committed to the evolution of our association to help continue to remain contemporary, financially resilient and to continue to deliver grassroots football across the county. In this context, our new Board Directors will play a critical part in helping to ensure we remain agile and robust enough to face the changing landscape of football in the county and nationally.
Our board and former Chair have helped to steer the organisation through the combined challenges of both Covid19 and a cost-of-living crisis. As we continue to navigate the impacts of our environment, we are looking for Directors to join our board to help support and advise our experienced executive team to continue to adapt and face the evolving landscape. This is a moment to join our board as we embark on our new four-year strategy “inspiring positive change through football” and in achieving our purpose of "working together to make a difference through the game we love - by increasing participation, regulating the game, and promoting safe, inclusive football."
You will be responsible for helping set and guide the strategy of the Board including ensuring corporate governance, supporting the executive and overseeing the affairs of the organisation, ensuring that the Board meets its obligations and responsibilities to its members. You will hold a key role in helping to bring expertise to the Board as well as providing appropriate challenge and accountability surrounding the performance of the Cumberland FA and ensuring that each Director fulfils their duties and responsibilities in delivering effective governance.
We are keen to ensure a variety of skills, professional experience and perspectives to capitalise on the benefits of a diverse, representative board ensuring we are best placed to support our county.
The following skillsets in particular are regarded as critical for the Board and are priorities for these appointments:
Safeguarding
Finance
Wellbeing and Safety Director
Commercial (including Marketing, Commercial Partnerships and/or Fundraising Director)
Successfully appointed candidates will demonstrate a passion for the power of sport, an inclusive leadership style and an understanding of the communities we serve across a large and diverse region. They will bring excellent communication skills and will be proactive in considering the views and needs of others allowing them to work collaboratively with our key stakeholders to enable our mission. Providing robust check and challenge and strategic acumen, they will work to ensure that we benefit from contemporary governance.
