An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head of Data Governance to join the University. Working within the Digital and Technical Services Directorate (DTS), you will report to the Chief Information Officer and head up the Data Governance Office.
In order to achieve its goals of Thrive 2028, the University must grow, operate effectively, and comply with a changing regulatory landscape. These priorities create a need for a data governance function that enables the University to run on clean data that is handled at scale and meets statutory reporting requirements.
The Head of Data Governance develops and leads this function, building important working relationships that enable data ownership roles to be recognised, supported, and coordinated within the localised management structures of the organisation. The role will drive improvements in data quality, processes, and use of data, and so reduce the burden of data management and statutory reporting over time.
They will be the source of authority on data governance, fostering a data culture throughout the organisation and providing a foundation for further data management activities. This will be achieved by prioritising efforts to improve data handling processes, by establishing data ownership roles, by providing support to those with such roles, and by establishing KPIs and other means of overseeing data quality.

Main Duties & Responsibilities Of The Role:
* To establish the data governance function
o To build and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with Directors and Heads of University functions that produce or process data
o To resolve cross-departmental data issues and maintain conceptual data models
o To create, develop and maintain metrics of success for the data governance maturity model and monitor service delivery for data governance.
o To play a leading role in the national Data Governance Network, sharing good practice and importing innovative ideas
o To establish collaborative working practices across the senior team within Digital & Technical Services in order to ensure that systems integration matures in step with data governance.
o To establish and maintain terms of reference for the Data Governance Steering Committee, with a reporting line to the University Executive Team
o Provide expert advice to the Nexus programme on the appropriate data architectures that will support good data management.
* To foster a data culture at BNU
o To manage communications that champion a data culture and extol the benefits of successful process improvements through good data governance
o To lead colleagues through a programme of change that identifies and recognises their data responsibilities
o To create and maintain data governance policies and standards, including a data glossary and a directory of master data sources.
o To build trust in university data, removing duplicated effort and empowering staff to take advantage of opportunities for data innovation.
o To manage the development needs of data owners and stewards, creating fora in which support and training can be provided
o Co-ordinate local data quality teams across the University to drive improvements in underlying data quality, agreeing priorities and monitoring progress
* To manage the data governance team
o To direct people change projects that improve data management
o Line management responsibilities including recruitment and selection, performance management, professional development, motivation, health & safety, and wellbeing.
o Comply with relevant legislative and other requirements (e.g., the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR; Health and Safety; UKVI; and Equality and Diversity) in all working practices
o Such other duties temporarily or on a continuing basis, as may reasonably be required.
