Job Title: Care Assistant Nursing Unit Reporting To:Senior Nurse, Staff Nurse, and Nurse Manager. Job Purpose: To share with other team members in meeting the personal needs of residents. This will be done in a way that respects the dignity of the individual and promotes independence and enjoyment of the environment. This is their Home To help in the care of the residents physical environment and in the general day to day activities of the Home. To take delegated responsibilities for the residents in your care and assist in the holistic care of the residents ie, their physical, psychological, social, emotional and spiritual needs. Principal Responsibilities To provide assistance to residents who need help with dressing, undressing, feeding, bathing / showering and toileting. Help residents with mobility problems and other physical disabilities such as incontinence; help in the care and use of aids and personal equipment, especially wheelchair cleaning and hoists. Issue and collect commodes/urinals and report any abnormality. Commodes are to be emptied promptly after each use, especially at night. Ensure the cleaning of these and other equipment as wheelchairs, hoists. Assist in the positioning and moving of residents according to current guidelines and training provided by Nazareth House Care Village. Assist or engage as directed in the washing, bathing and care of pressure areas. Report any change in skin condition to person in charge of shift. Turn mattresses every month. If asked to do so assist a senior member of staff with the administration of medication, if you feel competent to do so. Help in the promotion of holistic care of residents through talking to them, taking them out eg escorting wheelchair bound residents around the grounds, escorting them to church when appropriate, sharing with them in activities such as reading, writing, hobbies and recreations. Strip bed linen, make and change beds when necessary, tidy cupboards, wardrobes and drawers in residents room. Respond to the nurse call system promptly, when activated throughout the unit where based. Engage fully when required to do so in the reception, discharge and aftercare of residents. Help with the service of meals and assist residents to feed as instructed. Ensure prompt removal of spills and food dropped on chairs or floor by residents. Always use appropriate cutlery and napkins, and offer salt, pepper etc. Prepare drinks and light refreshments. Distribute and collect water jugs as directed. Observe and report changes in residents behaviour. When required to do so, answer the telephone politely, carefully record messages and pass these to the nurse in charge. On no account give out any information about residents conditions to callers / visitors. This is the responsibility of the Nurse in charge. When the front door is closed and locked, answer the doorbell and assist the visitor to the Home. Greet visitors to the Home with a smile-if you do not recognise someone, introduce yourself and ask who they have come to visit. This is a courteous way of ensuring that visitors have a genuine reason for being in the Care Village and is an important aspect of protecting the vulnerable adults in our care here. Ensure that confidentiality is maintained at all times. No information received about Nazareth House and residents is to be discussed outside the Home. Residents personal affairs are not to be discussed with other residents. Always act in a professional manner and ensure that you treat all residents and their families equally, avoid becoming over familiar with relatives. Ensure the Home is not brought into disrepute, including but not limited to, making negative or disparaging comments on social media sites or similar. Administration Report all comments/suggestions or complaints to the Nurse on duty. Read organisation policies and procedures, be aware of their contents and act accordingly. Ensure the safe keeping of residents belongings and valuables in accordance with organisation policy. Ensure accident book is completed for allstaff accidents. All accidents must be reported to the nurse in charge when they occur without delay and the time recorded. General Project and promote a professional, efficient and caring organisation image at all times, towards residents, colleagues and visitors. Attend fire drill and any other appropriate training. Ensure that you and all staff are familiar with fire procedures and fire evacuation. Compulsory training includes Caring for Vulnerable Adults, Managing Challenging Behaviour, Equal Opportunity Policy, Infection Control and Moving and Handling updates. Support staff undergoing their induction programme. Take part in staff meetings at least 3 per year. Ensure all reasonable precautions are taken to prevent accidents, and ensure the safety of residents, relatives, visitors and staff. Report immediately any defect, or fault noted in equipment or facilities within the Care Village. Demonstrate a positive attitude toward the organisation and personal duties and responsibilities, with good work habits and a willingness to put forth-extra effort when the situation arises. Staff support and input to functions in aid of the Residents Comfort Fund are welcomed and encouraged. Promote good housekeeping and prevent neglect of furnishings, fitments and equipment thereby ensuring an efficient and well-managed area of care. Practice due economy in the use of resources. Eg switch off unnecessary lights or televisions when no one is in the room. Use pads appropriately in line with each residents individual, assessed need. Show interest in updating job skills. The performance of any other duties and responsibilities which may be required from time to time to fulfil the requirements of the role within the Home. A consistently high standard of personal appearance, well groomed and with a high standard of personal hygiene at all times on duty. Able to communicate clearly and effectively with residents, colleagues and visitors to the Care Village. Able to read and write clearly with a good command of the English language. Courteous and able to establish a positive rapport with relatives and visitors to the Home. Positive attitude and openness to new ideas. Ability to take on board constructive criticism to enable the maintenance of a high standard of care. Reliable and punctual. Able to meet the mobility requirements of the job in full. No health problems which would affect ability to carry out the full range of duties or which would affect attendance at work. Able to get on well with others and be flexible in regard to duties allocated. If working on day duty, must be able to work both morning and evening shifts and weekends in accordance with the rota. Desirable criteria Experience of working with people in a team setting. Life experience eg caring for an elderly relative.
