As a member of the core clinical research facility (CRF) nursing team you will have opportunities to develop skills and knowledge in both research and cancer nursing helping to care for people receiving new and innovative treatments within the context of clinical trials including early phase and first in human treatments.
An ability to work - days, evenings, night shifts and occasional weekends is a requirement of the job.
Band 4 Nurse Associates will have the opportunity to work within a supportive environment, developing excellent skills and knowledge with support from our experienced CRF team, Research Nurses and Practice education Facilitator.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
PROFESSIONAL
• Undertake patient assessment and participate in the delivery of patient care for patients on clinical trials under the leadership, and after appropriate delegation from the registered nurse.
• Demonstrate research knowledge when caring for patients receiving treatment within the context of a clinical trial protocol.
• Undertake the nursing care of research patients, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained whilst being aware of physical and psychological needs.
• Undertake research related tasks as required by clinical trial protocols including but not limited to; collection and processing of biological samples, ECG’s, clinical observations and NEWS2, blood glucose monitoring and cannulation.
• Understand and work to relevant research specific SOPs and policies.
• Work co-operatively as part of the multi-disciplinary team, assisting nursing and other clinical staff to deliver a high standard of holistic patient-centred care.
• Alert the registered nurse promptly of any concerns or changes in the patient’s condition.
• Implement programmes of care and contribute to care plan modifications, undertaking risk assessments, as directed and within the limits of own knowledge and competence.
• Involve patients in shared decision-making and obtain consent before undertaking any nursing procedures.
• Provide and promote health education; support and encourage the patient to meet their own health and wellbeing needs.
• Act in ways that acknowledge and recognise peoples’ expressed beliefs, preferences and choices: respecting diversity and valuing people as individuals.
• Administer medications as outlined in the Trust policy.
• Perform agreed area specific procedures and clinical skills appropriate to the clinical area, in accordance with Trust guidelines and policies
• Ensure thorough and accurate documentation of nursing interventions.
• Communicate effectively with colleagues, providing clear verbal and written information and instructions when sharing information, delegating or handing over responsibility for care.
• Collect/record data accurately in accordance with Trust guidelines, policies and standards.
• Assist in the coordination and safe admission, transfer and discharge of patients in accordance with bed management procedures and Trust policies.
• Summon immediate help for any emergency and take appropriate action to contain it.
• Participate in the emergency care of patients and assist with/commence basic cardio-pulmonary resuscitation procedures as required.
• Be aware of the physical, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual needs of the dying patient; assess, lead and implement appropriate care management, as required, in conjunction with a registered nurse.
• Assist with the referral of patients to internal/external Allied Health Professionals and/or other agencies.
• Ensure a welcoming, caring and safe environment is provided for the patient and visitors.
• Handle patient’s personal possessions, ensure cash and valuables are kept securely as per policy.
• Give support to registered nurses in the provision of a safe and caring environment.
• Organise, prioritise and adjust own workload to enhance the delivery of patient care.
• Contribute towards ward/department organisation.
• Support and assist in the induction and training of Health Care Assistants at Band 2 & 3, acting as a role model.
• Identify potential risks for all staff, patients and visitors and adhere to relevant incident reporting procedures taking appropriate action/advice as needed.
• Understand, implement and practice the principles of Infection Prevention & Control.
• Help to maintain a safe environment and report faults/risks to the nurse in charge.
• Liaise with the Estates Department regarding repairs and maintain maintenance records.
EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
• Responsible for their own personal development, identifying learning needs and in producing and maintaining a Personal Development Plan, in conjunction with the ward/department manager.
• Responsible for developing and sustaining own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness.
• Reflect on and analyse workplace experiences to develop own skills/abilities/competence and performance.
• Participation in relevant Clinical Audits as per Trust guidance and National requirements.
• Complete competency modules, assessments and updates relevant to the ward/department.
• Annually attend all mandatory study days as per Trust and ward/department guidance.

• Work within own personal/professional parameters of practice at all times and to be aware of limitations, seeking help from others to maintain safe practice.
• Understand own level of responsibility and accountability in relation to registered practitioners.
• Demonstrate a pleasant and approachable manner and help create and promote a good working relationship.
• Communicate effectively and appropriately in the giving and receiving of verbal and written communications.
• Show professional and courteous manner when answering the telephone and other enquires
• Maintain confidentiality with regard to patient information both at work and outside of working hours
• Maintain professional boundaries and working relationships with patients and colleagues.
• To be aware of and adhere to all policies: including sickness and absence, confidentiality, uniform and responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act and be familiar with all risk assessments pertinent to ward/department.
• Night shifts and weekend working may occasionally be required to meet the clinical needs of the service.
• Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy.
INFECTION CONTROL
• Healthcare workers have an overriding duty of care to patients and are expected to comply fully with the best practice standards. You have a responsibility to comply with Trust policies for personal and patient safety and for prevention of healthcare-associated infection (HCAI); this includes a requirement for rigorous and consistent compliance with Trust policies for hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment and safe disposal of sharps. Knowledge, skills and behaviour in the workplace should reflect this; at annual appraisal you will be asked about application of practice measures known to be effective in reducing HCAI.
