We’re looking for an Industrial Placement to join our Engineer Radar Hardware Team and help us make a difference to our planet.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Met Office on a 12-month Year in Industry placement, developing your skills and knowledge and ensuring you gain the most value possible from your experience with us. You will have the opportunity to network with our cohort of Industrial Placements all over the Met Office and understand what career opportunities we can offer you after you graduate.
As our Engineer Radar Hardware Team Industrial Placement, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement. The location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Your world of expertise
Our Industrial Placement scheme offers ambitious and capable undergraduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience working alongside diverse and highly skilled experts in their field. You’ll be working on projects that really matter and will make a difference.
We operate a network of 15 weather radars across the UK and we're unique in having designed, built and installed these ourselves. Our Radar Hardware Team are a small team of engineers who continue to develop the system. This might be enhancing data quality, adding new capability, improving reliability or reducing running costs. We also provide expert advice to the operations and field engineering team.
You’ll be joining us at an exciting time as the team are working on several major hardware improvements, so you’ll have opportunities to visit some of our radars around the UK as well as other sites with other weather observing equipment. You may be able to join us as we install a radar at a brand-new site in East Anglia in 2025. We're also working with the Research and Development (R&D) team developing a new radar receiver and transitioning this into operational use. The team will be reworking a lab prototype into a form suitable for installation and test on our R&D radar. The design will need to consider maintenance and repair as well as how we can efficiently build 20 of them.
This placement covers many different engineering aspects - mechanical, electrical, electronics and manufacturing. You could be specifying and sourcing components, building and testing parts or drafting documentation. There will be many different tasks you could get involved in depending on your studies and area of interest.
* Gain experience in the real-world application of engineering skills and knowledge
* Design and implement modifications to existing radar equipment or design and assemble new radar components to improve the Met Office weather radar.
* Draft test or assembly instructions for other engineers to follow.
* Help with problem solving as the team provide expert technical support.
* As a new member of the team offer a different perspective and new ideas
* Share your acquired knowledge and work experiences and present progress reports at team meetings.

Whilst this is a temporary position until July 2026, there is potential for it to develop into an opportunity to join our Graduate Development scheme once you have completed your University studies.

Essential Criteria, skills and experience:
* You’re an expert by nature with a good underpinning engineering knowledge.
* You keep evolving with a passion to design and implement technical changes to make engineering improvements.
* You’re an expert by nature with evidence of practical skills and ability to use common engineering hand tools and test equipment.
* You have good written and verbal communication skills and can record or convey technical information clearly and concisely.
* You can analyse and solve technical problems.
* You work better together as part of a team and can take the initiative to plan and organise your work independently when required.
