The Shaft Engineer / Shaft Surveyor will be a member of the shaft sinking crew and is responsible for the coordination, collection, and reporting of all the routine technical data related to the shaft sinking activities.
In particular, the Shaft Technician will:
1. Produce shift logs to track progress, downtime, pick consumption, ventilation readings, logging blast times, etc.
2. Maintain situational awareness and advise the sinking crew of any known potential hazards, changes in diameter, and expected conditions.
3. Be the in-shaft surveying resource, duties will include:
* Collecting high-resolution point cloud data of the excavation.
* Monitoring the excavation depth and diameter.
* Maintaining the guidance system where applicable.
* Monitoring the shaft alignment (plumb, rotation, etc.).
* Setting out probe holes and drill patterns for blasting purposes where applicable.
* Setting out lining pours and shaft installations such as brackets, etc., as required.
* Carrying out surveys of accident sites if required.
* Carrying out as-built surveys of the lining (visual inspection and scans).
* Carrying out convergence monitoring within the completed shaft portion.
Collate Geological and Geotechnical data of the ground as the sink progresses including:
1. Basic mapping/logging of exposed ground.
2. Taking photographs.
3. Collection of any samples as required.
4. Monitoring probe drilling activities (logging water inflow rates, etc.).
5. Monitoring grouting operations (recording volumes, pressures, timings, etc. in accordance with the grouting procedure).
Carry out QA/QC on the lining installation including:
* Carrying out concrete flow and slump tests.
* Collecting samples.
Aid the technical services departments (survey, geology, Geotech, vent) when required.
Check the work area to identify any potential hazards, if within capabilities make safe and report actions or escalate to the area supervisor.
Understand and implement the Company’s safety policy, standards, and systems.
Conduct risk assessments on activities within your area of responsibility, ensuring that the methods and systems of work are safe.
Ensure that the oncoming shaft technicians are briefed on all relevant matters.
Immediately rectify or stop any operation or work that in your opinion needs to be rectified or stopped on grounds of safety.
Set a personal example on all matters of health and safety.
Key Experience
* Experience of working in an underground mining or tunneling environment in a surveying, geology, or geotechnical role would be an advantage.
* Experience of working in a small team.
* A Degree in mining engineering or Geodesist / Geology or similar in a mining or civils environment.

The role will be on a 9/2/9/2/9/14 day shift pattern (9 days on, 2 off, 9 afters on, 2 off, 9 nights on, 14 days off, including some rostered annual leave each rotation).
