The Communications Engineer position at Heathrow Airport involves assisting in the installation and maintenance of communication systems within a dynamic and secure environment. This role requires technical proficiency, adherence to health and safety standards, and effective collaboration with the project team.
Key Responsibilities:
1. System Installation and Maintenance: Assist in installing communication cables (CAT6, voice, and fiber multicore), including cable pulling, dressing, termination, and testing. Utilize tools such as Fluke DSX and OTDR for testing and perform fault-finding tasks. Experience with fiber splicing using tools like the Fujikura 60s/70s is preferred.
2. Containment Installation: Install various types of containment systems (tray/basket) for cable management.
3. Health and Safety Compliance: Fully understand and adhere to health and safety policies and safe working practices. Assist supervisors with completing point-of-work risk assessments and actively promote a positive health and safety culture.
4. Team Collaboration: Work effectively within a team, ensuring tasks are completed diligently and to the required standards.
5. Documentation: Attend necessary briefings and maintain accurate records of work performed.
6. Flexibility: Be prepared to work both day and night shifts as required to successfully deliver the project.
Experience and Qualifications:
1. Experience: Knowledge and experience of installing on-site IT infrastructure projects within challenging operational environments. Aviation or rail experience is preferable.
2. Technical Skills: Experience with cabling and physical infrastructure installation. Familiarity with network infrastructure, fault finding, and the use of test equipment is beneficial.
3. Qualifications: A valid CSCS/ECS card is mandatory. Additional certifications such as SSSTS, driving license, airside driving experience, PASMA, IPAF, working at height training, confined space and rescue, and asbestos awareness (UKATA) are preferred but not mandatory.
Additional Requirements:
1. Security Clearance: A demonstrable 5-year working history is required to obtain airside pass authorization at Heathrow Airport.
