We’re looking for a skilled Ranger to join our Countryside team. This is an exciting opportunity to work in one of the most spectacular landscapes in the South East.
What it's like:
With its rolling Downland and spectacular coastal views, the South Downs East estate includes some of the most iconic countryside sites in Sussex, from the white cliffs at Birling Gap and Seven Sisters to Europe's largest dry valley at Devil’s Dyke. Our sites are special places for wildlife and people.
We manage landscapes here and work with our graziers, farm tenants, partners, and stakeholders to ensure that we are achieving the best for wildlife and our visitors, whilst always ensuring that we protect the nature, beauty, and history of these special places for everyone, forever.
You’ll be based at Farrer Hall in East Dean, just 4 miles West of Eastbourne and report to the Area Ranger. You’ll work with a small team of Rangers and many volunteers, working to restore our rare chalk grassland habitats and protect our nationally important archaeology.
What you'll be doing:
You’ll be responsible for the day-to-day management of our busy Countryside sites, ensuring that we’re delivering our nature conservation objectives, protecting our important archaeology, and providing safe access for our visitors.
This will involve leading groups of volunteers and carrying out practical habitat management, rights of way maintenance, fencing, and a myriad of other jobs – no week is the same here.
You’ll be using chainsaws, brushcutters, and other tools and machinery, whilst ensuring that you’re always working to the highest health and safety standards.
Our sites receive many visitors, so sharing your wildlife knowledge and passion for the countryside will also be an important part of the role.
The nature of the role will require some lone working and occasional weekend working.
Who we're looking for:
* Practically experienced in conservation work to protect and improve habitats and landscapes.
* Happy to talk to all kinds of people about the work you’re doing and why it matters.
* Hard-working and willing to learn.
* Able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines.
* Experienced in managing land, access, and conservation, and working outdoors.
* Able to use machinery and equipment, with relevant certificates.
* A driver with a full UK driving licence.
