We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic Registered Nurse to join our Ophthalmology team. The ophthalmology unit provides Outpatient, Theatre and Inpatient services but you will primarily provide care in the Outpatient Department. This role is based in Rugby St Cross Hospital but will involve working cross-site. The ability to travel between sites in a timely manner is essential.
The successful applicant will complete the Research and Development training programme to develop the necessary specialist research skills required for this post. The ideal candidate will have previous experience in ophthalmology nursing, alongside excellent communication skills, be reliable, hardworking and work well within a team. The applicant must be a registered nurse and demonstrate commitment to their own personal development and show a keen interest in the future development of the profession and ophthalmology services.
Candidates must have a current NMC registration to continue with the application.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work predominantly with ophthalmology research studies, collaborating with leading principal investigators, the research team, and the wider multidisciplinary team to provide opportunities for patients to participate in research studies. Responsibilities include:
* Leading complex studies and managing a caseload of their own, supporting other studies within the bounds of their registration.
* Participating in the recruitment of patients into clinical research, including clinical trials of drugs and new interventions within set time limits.
* Monitoring patients and observing for side effects, reporting according to set protocols.
* Maintaining accurate and comprehensive records of data derived from the research studies.
* Ensuring all research undertaken within the department safeguards the well-being of participants and is conducted within the research governance framework.

Job responsibilities
* Ensure care to patients is delivered according to Trust policies and procedures and the research protocol.
* Co-ordinate the care of own caseload of clinical trial/research patients in addition to oversight of junior team members' caseloads.
* Work unsupervised in all areas related to clinical trials and research studies and supervise the work of junior team members.
* Attend Multi-disciplinary Meetings to assess volunteers/patients for eligibility for research and recruit new patients.
* Ensure that trial-specific clinical investigations/procedures are undertaken as required by the research protocol.
* Recognise and report/manage any complaints from patients/carers.
* Take responsibility for the supervision of junior research nurses and act as a resource.
* Assist in the education and support of other health care professionals.
* Respond to change in line with the needs of the service.
