Description ABOUT THE ROLE An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the University of Northumbria, working within Department of Geography and Environmental Science, with duties for the UK Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM). CPOM is a world-leading centre that creates and uses satellite observations and numerical models to study processes occurring at Earth’s polar latitudes. Its core work is to provide UK national capability science, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) in partnership with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), and this underpins a broader programme of research carried out in collaboration with a wide range of strategic partners, including the European Space Agency. At Northumbria, CPOM is closely aligned with established interdisciplinary research themes on Extreme Environments, Global Development, and Space. Working within the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences at Northumbria University, this post will provide expertise to further enhance our research, teaching and entrepreneurial activities related to polar observations and modelling. This will include designing, developing and delivering high-quality teaching activities, undertaking individual and joint research to produce high-quality academic outputs, and participating in external activity to generate income, promote the subject, and raise the University’s profile. It will also include building new collaborations within the Department and beyond. ABOUT YOU As a senior Academic colleague, you will assist the Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor to maintain and enhance the University’s national and international reputation in your academic field. You must demonstrate continuing academic achievement and provide academic leadership (of your subject and associated colleagues) through active contribution to your discipline and to the life and work of the Faculty and the wider University. This will include contributing to significant change within practice, the discipline, profession and/or community at regional, national, and international level. This role will be responsible for leading CPOM’s sea ice Earth Observation activities, which will include directing and supervising staff working at Northumbria and collaborating with other CPOM institutions to meet core objectives of the long-term CPOM National Capability single centre science programme (PRESCIENT) and multi-centre project Climate Change in the Arctic and North Atlantic Region and Impacts on the UK (CANARI). The position is anticipated to be hired in the range Lecturer to full Professor, as appropriate to qualifications and experience. Specific responsibilities of this post will include: Leading CPOM’s programme of national capability and externally funded research on sea ice Earth Observation. A track record of research excellence in polar science is essential, as is experience of successfully leading collaborative research projects to deliver on their objectives. Knowledge and understanding of remote sensing, satellite altimetry, and sea ice science are highly desirable. There may also be the opportunity to act as CPOM Co-Director, depending on experience. Duties for the CPOM Co-Director would include co-leading CPOM’s program of national capability and externally funded research, which involves around 40 staff spread across several UK Universities. Experience of leading a collaborative research activity and a track record in developing polar observations and/or modelling are essential.
